Seen a Synology 1821+ for circa £858 recently and have been wanting to move from a QNAP TS-873A, what's the consensus re Synology these days. I know the M2 drive pool aspect is frustrating re only support via their own hardware etc.

My QNAP currently has 4 x 12TB WD Red Plus drives and 2 x 1TB WD Red M2 drives. I may get a BOSS card for the Proxmox server and move the M2 drives to that and then use some spare 512GB M2 drives as cache drives in the Synology.

Synology only support their own drives now which is frustrating as I purchased Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives and expected there to be the Ironwolf health in the storage manager but this has been removed. I can perform a basic smart test on the drives but it does not tell me any more info than the test passed.

So based on this i’d say look elsewhere.
