Hi

I have a Synology DS215+.

It had a 1TB WD RED in it and earlier today i put in a 2TB WD RED.

I did the expand storage wizard and have added the drive. It has installed and is showing two drives, 1TB and 2TB, however, my storage is still only 1TB.

I can't see any options to use the storage or merge the two drives or anything like that.

How do i start using the extra space?

I did have 80kb of space left before i put the drive in, this has gone up to 1.7mb after.

Should be able to do it under the storage manager, though by default it's set up as SHR which mirrors the data over both drives which is why you still only have 1TB of storage.

How do you have the current storage setup, do you have a disk group with a volume on it or just a volume ?

If you have expanded the disk group by adding a disk you then need to expand the volume to access the additional space

Storage Manager > Volume > Select Required Volume > Click Manage in the menu bar.

As mentioned above if you have it setup as SHR you won't get any more space as it's mirrored over both drives with the smallest drives space available for use.

it is indeed set up as SHR, how do i change this?

Currently repairing the drive as i turned it off and took the new drive out and turned it back on, it didn't like this.

If i change it to one large volume will i have to format to this and lose all my data?

If you want it as one large volume then yes you'd have to format and lose your data.

You can format the new disk and reinsert it into the NAS and then set it up as a new volume and you'd gain access to the full size of the new disk.

Unfortunately yes. No idea why; if the same data is on both drives you'd think it'd be easy enough for it to just keep all that on one and expand the volume to the other HDD, but alas...

You need to buy another 2tb drive then replace the 1tb drive with this. it will expand the volume to 2tb.

SHR in 2 drive mode gives you raid1.

This is why I recommend 4 bay NAS at a minimum, and always buy the largest red drives possible.

Currently 6tb.

if i format, will it delete everything and be like a fresh start on the synology?

Or will it keep the OS setup and all my package settings.

Or can i back up my applications?

I don't fancy having to set up all my apps again.

i want to use the max space i can, no backup.

so i want 3gb.

everything on there can be replaced so i will just back up what i can and format it.

a pain and would have liked to avoid it but it can be my saturday plan.
