Synology DS-106e questions... (or QNap TS-101)

OK... When this unit isn't being used is it silent? ie: Can you get it to turn off it's hard drive after 30mins for example? Seems a lot of people comment on the fan noise from this unit!

What is the process for offering the device or directories on the device over the network? ie: You don't have to install/run stuff on every machine on the network to see the 106e do you?

As it's uPnP I assume you don't have to do anything if your router is uPnP compliant? ie: If you want to allow FTP/HTTP to the box, it will just work.

Any other general thoughts?

I'm trying to weight up that box against a QNap TS-101!

I've got the ds106j (pata) which doesnt have a fan. My system is fairly silent, all I hear now is the hard drive which at present doesnt spin down due to a firmware issue - being worked on supposedly. The models with a fan should have the fan spin down when the temps are below a certain temperature.

As to opening ports - I did mine myself on my router anyway because I needed a redirect from external ip into the internal ip and I used the port as reference plus there was a conflict between the ports on the router and the syno.

To use the device, obviously there has to be access etc but it should just appear in the my network places on the pc (if the folder is restricted you will need the username/password), the folders can be mapped to specific drives as well using normal xp methods.

Print server - easiest to set up using the supplied software but it isnt needed to do it.

I would recommend one thing if you did buy it - wait the 07 models are coming out in april with additional features - go take a look at the synology forum for more info :)

Many thanks! I wasn't aware of the new model so thanks!

Silent, when not in use is VERY important to me!

What in your opinion is the best method of backing up from it. ie: If the data on it is important how would it best be to back it up?

Either plug in a usb drive (or second syno) and use the inbuilt back up facilities or go for the 207 when it comes out and have it in mirrored raid (I'm 99% certain it supports it) maybe.

Having said that I use mine purely for the purpose of web and ftp server so if I lose the data it isnt such a big deal. I have a seperate raid 3 server for any critical info and I also back up onto dvd as well.

I would also recommend if you want silence to buy a pack of the little rubber bump stops (about 7mm clear rubber domes) you get for cupboards and drawers from a local hardware store for a couple of quid. They knocked out a fair bit of the drive noise that was oscilating through my desk unit. They seem to work a treat, I use them on my external usb drives too :)

Any idea if my Canon MP830 multifunctional will be supported (not currently in their list)? anyone used one with this printer and worked btw?

Thanks

The xx-x07s have only been launched at CeBit. It will be a little while before stock is actually shipped out and arrives in the UK as it comes over in containers on boats.

do what i do

have it the other way round. Have all the important data on your computer. Then backup all that important data to the diskstation. Set up the FTP server and you can access this data anywhere in the world. Should the disk on it go, you've got the primary copy on your pc, and vice versa..

use sync toy or windows backup to keep the stuff syncronised.

Or DSynchronize 2.3 :) http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/

printer should work, my ip5200 works minus the status info, very much doubt the scanner etc will though.

set up a reverse dns domain name using someone like www.dyndns.org. Configure your router to use the service, my zyxel has a specific section in the menu for this.

Then set the relevent ports to forward to the synology - with my zyxel I had to make a custom firewall rule and I also configured the nat server aspect of the router.

Unconfirmed reports from CeBit suggest the following specs:

Code:
Version | CPU | RAM
--------+---------+-----
DS-107e | 266 MHz | 32 MB
DS-107 | 266 MHz | 64 MB
DS-107+ | 500 MHz | 64 MB
DS-207 | 266 MHz | 64 MB
CS-407e | 266 MHz | 64 MB
CS-407 | 500 MHz | 128 MB
RS-407 | 500 MHz | 128 MB

I'm hoping to see a DS-207+, with twice the ram at least!

When/why is the ram significant for this unit? (ie: For average users?)

as far as I am aware the extra ram only really comes into play when there are a lot of users on the device. Although with the x07 series it may be different due to the firmware etc

So not really important at all to your average user :)
