Hi,
I replied in another thread, but I felt this warrants a new thread, so....

I want to order a DS211 and 2x 2TB drives.
However, I don't have a PC at home at all, just laptops and some of the recommended drives need firmware updates to work in the DS211 etc.

So, without updating firmware on the drives, which drives work best. Could I update the firmware in the DS211 or does it really require a PC to do so?

I just want a package deal on a DS211 and 2 HDDs, simple no? :)

Cheers,
Lee.

I saw the same thing when I was ordering my 211j yesterday.
However, the description says "Must upgrade to firmware xxx before using 2TB drive".
However when you look at the Synology website, you can see that the latest firmware version is a lot higher than the "minimum required for 2TB drives".
So my assumption is that the unit will ship with a firmware quite capable of reading any of the drives you install.

I went for 2 of the Seagate ST32000542AS drives for my unit.

You should be able to upgrade the firmware from your laptop - I'm assuming the Synology unit will have a web front-end.

If it really does arrive with a firmware that won't support the 2TB drives, then all you need to put in is "any" SATA HD just to do the firmware upgrade.
Maybe a friend can loan you an old disk?
You could probably get a low capacity SATA drive from EBay for £10 - that kind of thing.

Cheers Ringo.

I might jsut risk it and order DS211 and 2 of the those drives, seeing as they are on "this week only".

I only need the Synology and drives right? Do I need cables or anything?

Oh sorry - me bad :)
According to the Synology website it only appears to be Western Digital drives that need specific firmware revisions.
So I'd say, to be safe, stay away from the WD units :)

I've got a 207+ with 2x2TB Seagate drives and its great. The software on the Synology boxes are very good.

I got my 211j & 2x Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB (ST32000542AS) up and running last night.
Installed latest version of the OS and it's been great.

Now backing up all 3 of our machines to it and creating a central iTunes library.

Ok, soo all unpacked, connected and hmmmmm :(

So far I can only get 1 drive to be recognised within the DSM application :(
If I switch them over, the other one works... So they both seem to work but only 1 at a time and it's the 1 in bay1 not bay2.

Can you check if the bay is actually sliding in correctly? Can you try a different caddie in different bay if you understand me?

Edit: Sorry I thought for a moment that the disks were connected to holders first and then slotted in.

Do you have any old disks lying about? Just make sure the connections are ok and that the disk is pressed in to the connectors properly.

I just updated to the DSM 3.0 (with spin patch) and both drives are now recognised.
Currently building the SHR (Synlogy Hybrid RAID) array, using both disks (mirrored).

Seems think it will give me a single 1.82TB volume.

So far so good, just a shame I had to update the DSM to see both drives.

Woke up this morning to find the array built and mounted :)

DSM as a web based application works really well.

Linked 1 of my IP cameras to surveillance station, that seems to work well enough too. Just need to buy another license in order to link my 2nd cam.

Now to set up shares and iTunes stuff later tonight.

Other than the minor hiccup when I first powered it on, I'm impressed.
