Hi

Just wondered how this nas performs? I would be using it in raid 0, I assume it supports it? with two WD green 2tb

Reason I'm asking is I had a 107j and that was dog slow, less than 5mb/s write speeds. DSM 2 though I think at that time? Maybe even 1 I can't remember (or know if it affected speeds)!

I sold it and got an icybox 4220 but the fans going on it and it droops off the network every few days and is just generally bugging me now.

Check out the synology website as they have perf figures published. I have the Ds212J with a single WD 3TB and get much higher than 5mb/s. There are some reviews out there which also have file transfer speed data.

How did you connect to your old Synology NAS? WiFi, 10mb/s Lan, 100mb/s Lan or Gigabit LAN. I had get a gigabit switch to achieve the max speeds.

Although I have a WDmy book 2, They come fitted with the WD Green drives. 15mb/s on a gig network. So the Synology with better CPU/RAM should be faster with the same drives.

I look forward to your results, as I want to transfer the drives in to a 212j. I Went witha WD my book for price (work discount) but the limited CPU leads to poor DLNA distribution with more than 2 HD streams. and remote acces is no very helpful for files transfers out side the home network. Mionet pffft.

Just upgraded from a DS210j to a DS212. Absolutely flies and worth looking at if you can stretch the budget. The ios apps are great too.

Is it worth the extra £70, i would be using it to back up my main drives and streaming to TV, nothing too demanding.

ive seen the raid 1 speeds all over the place but no raid 0 speeds, could i expect them to be better (as with PC speeds) or does it not support raid 0?

Also the thing that worries me is the time it will take to rebuild ~3TB

Edit:

Just realised, you said DS210J to DS212 lol, i was wondering if there would be a significant difference between the J and the standard 212

For the average user probably not, check out the Synology website and have a look at the extra features you get with the 212 and 212+ and decide whether that's something you'd need in future. I picked up a 212+ as I wanted the eSATA port and it wasn't a massive price difference compared to the 212.

Transfer times on my 212+ are pretty damn good btw, usually hits over 60MB/s on large files and around 50-55MB/s on smaller files when copying to the device, even faster when copying back onto my PC.

Just ordered, got the 212, decided i liked the hard drive install method and the black, sucker huh

ill post my findings later in the week

Hi everyone, i have an update for those interested, i set the drive in Raid 0 and get between 50 - 60 for most large file transfers, my backup is nearly finished transfering the 2tb+ of media files after around 12 hours, got DLNA working to stream to my TV (LE46C650), but the TV is a bit techy sometimes and doesnt like staying on the network (weird).

I am using the DSM 4, which is cool, its like a GUI OS from within an IE browser

all in all i am happy so far

I agree regarding DSM 4 - really nice. Setting up the remote access is very easy as well, however I'm at a loss as to how to use SADNZB remotely. The RSS reader interface is crap!

Have found one problem, was using SyncToy to syncronise data between the NAS and my PC originals, just re-run it to check and it says that half of the files are out of sync, even though there appears to be no difference in the timestamp or file size, has something gone wrong? or is it a bug in synctoy? are there any good alternative softwares? just looked at the synology one and it looks too simple

Hey Dan, good to hear you went for the DS212. The J model would probably suffice but I like you by the sound of it was drawn to the hotswap bays and the faster speeds. Though I have been fortunate to have been provided with all 3 for reviewing purposes I stuck with the 212.

I'm running DSM 4 too which is a pleasure to use.

I've also been using synctoy mate and can't say I ahve experienced that problem. You can set it up though to sync in 3 or 4 different ways so worth checking that.

On a seperate note if anyone is interested, my review site can be found here. My review of the now released DS112j is now live.

Goodsync seems to work OK, so ill use that for a while, bit more complicated though, strange about synctoy, never had any problems before with it

get 87.7 on the download, which is writing to a WD green which may be slowing things down, the giga net is at 87% utilisation also (funnily enough)
