Interested in the Synology DS214 for home office use. Anyone have experience with this particular model? Trying to find out if it can be connected to a APC UPS? Also, how fast are they on a Gigabit + Wireless-N network?

Will also need some HDDs & wondering if any advantage going for NAS type ones or ordinary ones should do e.g. WD Green, etc?

Due to the nature of it always being on and the drives being close together then use NAS specific drives like the WD reds or Seagate NAS drives. They are designed for this use and have anti vibration built in to stop the spinning up from one drive affecting the other.

You can use an APC UPS with it. https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/faq/300 This link shows you which models are supported.

Something like the APC BE550G-UK would be perfect.

USB interface which the Synology can gracefully shut down with.

Have an APC Smart-UPS 1000VA, can't see it listed there but its similar to the 1500VA one.

Also, on the HDDs: Can I get a single drive then add another one later?

Well any UPS would work for providing power, but if you want it to tell the Synology to shut down, then you'll either need a USB interface or an SNMP card in the UPS.

So, went for it & setup-it-up over the weekend. Been running since then &, so far its great! Should have gone NAS ages ago...
