Hi all, A while back i bought a ds216j with 4tb from ocuk to use as storage for kodi and quickly filled it with my movies/tv shows, so i bought a new 4tb to add to it, ive added the new 4tb but somehow not expanded but mirrored the existing drive now i cannot unmirror or expand.
the option to manage is greyed out.

can someone please explain to me how to fix this without loosing my data.

ive tried to google but everyone post i find tells me to go to manage but i cant as its greyed out.

EDIT: it tells me its a hybrid raid (SHR)

thanks Ali

You can't, SHR will do exactly what it's done. You'd need to copy your data off, format the drives and configure them to act as JBOD.

I'm in the same boat unfortunately, bought a 214se a few years ago with one 3TB HDD, added a second HDD a year or so later but didn't realise it'd mirror them. One day I'll borrow an external HDD of suitable capacity and copy everything off to start again, but it's going to be a weekend's work I think!

sods law ive got a 4tb external but its half full so need to offload that before i can offload nas, heres for a long weekend of data moving!!

This is why I recommend 4 bay Synology for media storage.

That's why I went for a 415+ back when I got mines, although I appreciate not everyone can afford the extra outlay but I think 2 drive bays can be very restrictive in the long run.

Aren't you going to lose the data of one of drives fails? It's better to have a raid 1 mirror

Yep, they'll lose the redundancy.

SHR with 4 drives creates a Raid5 setup. So you can lose one drive then fit a spare and it will rebuild.

So with 4x 6tb drives, you get a volume size of 18tb.

Anyone that doesn't have at least backup of their data is a fool.

Ive got 90% of the data backed up, the odd tv show or movie im not to worried about, I wanted more space for the media centre so can i grab from 1 location instead of accessing multiple locations.
I will invest in a 4 or 6 bay when more moneys come my way!

I've got 2 x 2tb in raid 1, if I pull one of the drives and replace it with 4tb drive, let it rebuild, then replace the other 2tb, will my data be preserved?

^Yes, since you have 4x drives, This is how I would tackle it..

Connect up the second 4TB drive via a USB drive reader for now and take a backup of the data.

Once that is done, take out the first 2TB drive, then fit the first 4TB drive. Let this replicate, it will take a while. If you have a UPS, I'd connect it up to be safe.

After that has finished, remove the second 2TB drive and connect up the second 4TB drive.

Basically, do this 2x..
