Synology Nas DS411j - Adding A Full HDD From Windows Pc

That's good to hear mate. I personally have a password set on mine if only to stop potential burglars getting my personal data if stolen.

Hi Mate

Did you install any programs on the nas when you had it. I have installed Emby server and its impossible to use and so so slow. I installed Sabnzbd and it works a bit better than Emby server but its still quite slow to react to anything i do. The main reason i bought it was for storage but it would be great is i could get Emby server and Sabnzbd to work properly.

I only used it for the download station and storage for serving media around the house really mate. It's a single core with like 256mb of ram or something so not exactly a performance orientated spec.

I'd recommend slowly copying over an Ethernet connections - the drive may be formatted to work with the NAS only, which is why windows warned you about file loss if you tried to mount it in windows.

Synology use their own proporietary (On at least incompatible with NTFS) filesystem for the drives which is why you can't just plug in your HDD.

Just copy over the network. Only a one time job so does it matter if it takes a while?

Thanks for the advice guys. I have a large amount of movie files to move from my pc now so i have bought a 10m cat6 network cable to reach from my pc to my router and then to my nas via a cat5e network cable. In future my downloads will go to my nas so there will be no need for large file transfers.

What security measures should i take apart from a strong password, there is an av package but it recommends 512mb of ram and i only have 128mb of ram.

I cant run Emby server, when using the web interface, it takes a long long time to respond. Sabnzbd only downloads at a max of 12mb/s due to the nas's low spec. I think its only good for storage etc and i need to forget running any packages.
