Hi folks,

As title suggests. I would like to replace one (Amber warning) hdd for a new one. I have a 4 slot nas and I'm only using 3 slots, I have 3x 4tb hdd's in JBOD Btrfs.

I was thinking it should be possible to slot in a new 4tb hdd (now all 4 slots are occupied) then copy contents to new hdd and remove old hdd, thus free up slot so I could do it all over again in the future as another starts to fail. It seems this is not possible? I thinks the closest option is "Hot Spare".

Is what I trying to do the best course of action in this situation or am I going about this the wrong way?

It depends on what RAID format you have set up, but assuming you are running a suitable RAID, I think you should remove the faulty drive, replace it with the new drive, and the NAS will then rebuild the array automatically. There is usually 1 drive redundancy, unless you are using JBOD, in which case you may be in trouble.

The problem is that JBOD is probably set up to span the data across all three drives so it's not possible to copy files by individual drive. Setting up a hot spare then letting the system use it is probably your only solution.

Thanks guys. I think I'll pickup a 12tb drive and setup a raid then remove failing drive then restore the 3 x4tb and keep the 12 tb safe
