I've currently got a Synology (DS214Play) running SHR with 1 drive (2tb) - this drive has got data on it. I want to add another drive (3tb), but dont want any mirroring, etc, as they only contains videos, etc, so no protection required.

How do I go about adding this new drive in a way that gives me 5tb storage? I am no bothered if I end up multiple volumes, as I assume this will make it easier for me to upgrade one of the drives at a later stage?

You need to add them as JBOD or Spanned mode. You will probably still lose the data on all drives you add to it. You will also get no extra performance or redundancy.

^Poor advice.

When you connect it, it will ask you what you want to do, you'll have the option of merging it into your SHR or creating a new volume.

You certainly won't lose any data on existing drive.

There's no need to add them as spanned (RAID0) as it's just asking for trouble.

If you're dealing with a system that has more than two drives, then it's advisable to create a Disk Group, you specify which disks belong to the group and then build the volumes inside that group.
