I will be looking to get or learn to make a NAS but from what people are saying the micro server is the way to go, cheaper, faster?

Anyone advise and provide some good gen and comparisons

The Microserver people refer to is the 'HP ProLiant MicroServer G7 N54L'. See the huge thread here.

They're nice little server boxes, but if you're just after a NAS rather than something to play with then give your money to Synology.

Surely if it's cheaper for the microserver then our money should go on that? The synology ds414 play is over 300 quid but the server new is 135?

microserver is certainly cheaper, i actually ditched my DS1010+ for an N40L and Startech DAS. But then I went down the MS server route for DHCP/DNS/HyperV etc etc.

depends what you want though, if you just want a NAS that will do X i.e. serve files (and a few other bits via plugins) and do it extremely well get a Synology (or QNAP, mostly the same). if you want a server that you can mod and tweek and completely customise with apps then get the micrsoserver.

unless you have a low budget, then just get the microserver :D

I went for the HP N54L, ordered it last week (£130) along with 4 x 3TB WD Reds and set it up over the weekend :). Also got a Raspberry Pi for the main TV so my partner can stream from the server without having to know what she is doing lol.

I'm glad I went for this over a NAS as I can upgrade it if I ever feel the need and also I'm not limited to a specific OS (I've put Xpenology on it for now).
