microserver is certainly cheaper, i actually ditched my DS1010+ for an N40L and Startech DAS. But then I went down the MS server route for DHCP/DNS/HyperV etc etc.
depends what you want though, if you just want a NAS that will do X i.e. serve files (and a few other bits via plugins) and do it extremely well get a Synology (or QNAP, mostly the same). if you want a server that you can mod and tweek and completely customise with apps then get the micrsoserver.
unless you have a low budget, then just get the microserver
I went for the HP N54L, ordered it last week (£130) along with 4 x 3TB WD Reds and set it up over the weekend . Also got a Raspberry Pi for the main TV so my partner can stream from the server without having to know what she is doing lol.
I'm glad I went for this over a NAS as I can upgrade it if I ever feel the need and also I'm not limited to a specific OS (I've put Xpenology on it for now).
