Synology Storage Upgrade/Expansion?

I couldn't find a general Synology/NAS thread, apologies if there is one.

I currently have a Synology DS920+ (4 bay NAS) with 4x 14TB WD RED.
It's starting to reach capacity using Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR).

What would be the best upgrade route to expand storage?
  1. I've read that the DX517 expansion enclosure is supported by the DS920+, but it's not far off the price of a full 4-bay NAS.
  2. A second full 4/5 bay Synology NAS.
  3. Switch to a 6/8 bay Synology NAS. This is probably expensive and difficult if it requires having new one setup to transfer before selling current setup.
  4. Upgrading the drives to larger capacity in my current NAS, although I think it only supports up to 16TB. Drives start at £320 on OcUK it seems.
Any advice or route others have taken before?

Thanks

1. The 9 in DS920+ means it supports up to nine drives and this is by adding a DX517. This would be one of the least painful routes as there's very little risk to your existing data.
2. A second NAS would also be reasonably painless but is there a reason why you're limiting yourself to Synology? Yes, DSM is probably the best NAS OS but Synology hardware seems to be lagging behind QNAP and Asustor plus they try to force you to use their branded HDDs and RAM.
4. There's no reason why your existing NAS shouldn't support more than 16TB. That was probably the largest HDD available when the NAS was released.

If you switch to 6/8 bay you just put the disks in then expand onto other drives as you add them. So although you'd need to buy the new NAS before you sold the old one - you wouldn't need to buy NAS AND drives.
I'm waiting to see if a new one comes out this year, the 1821+ has been out for three years now, cant be much longer until we get a 1824+\1825+
(last 2 digits is release year)

I've done this before with a couple of Qnap systems, and it was great - just pop the drives into the new NAS and it's all there.

I think the two options listed here are the right ones to choose between - replace with a 6/8 bay unit, or add the expansion. Just whichever you feel makes the most sense.

I’m waiting too, to then sell my QNAP 873A and move to Synology
