In an attempt to quieten down my ageing PC i've fitted myself a Zalman Flower Cooler thingamy, problem is 30 seconds after powering up the system shuts itself down and the alarm starts going.

Now to make sure nothing was overheating I re-started and immediately booted in the bios system health check, and the maximum temp it get's to before turning itself off is 37C so WTF is going on!!!!

Ideas please people cos i'm out of them!!!

check the heatsink and CPU temperature by touch and get a rough estimate from that.

try updating the bios ?

whats the system spec ?

Not going to be able to update the BIOS if it only stays on for 30 seconds :(, it's an Athlon 2500XP+ with and Abit NF7 v2 motherboard.

And the heatsink really isn't that warm, as for the CPU I can't really touch that, but as I said the BIOS reckons 37C

whats the shutdown temperature set to in the bios, is there a fan monitor ? i know low rpm fans can set these off too

can you not put the old heatsink back on then flash it ;)

Shut down temp of 70C, there is a fan monitor but i've disabled the shutdown if CPUFan fail option.

My old CPU fan had an RPM of 6000, i've attached a speed modifer to that now and it's going at about 2600 RPM which is a lot quieter. Temps at the mo in the BIOS seems to be leveling out at

54C CPU Temp
31C System Temp

That sound reasonable?

54c is pretty damn high for a CPU. Are you sure that you are applying the thermal compound correctly?

30 seconds is about the time it took for my CPU to shut down after my heatsink fell off the CPU. That was a dodgy superglueing effort on my ****** dell non-spec mobo. Now it's lying on its side :p
