System build for Autocad £500 available or thereabouts

ok, further progress. Have placed order with OCUK, first order for a long time chaps so hope it goes smoothly.

Took the advice on the Core i7, so have got;

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel (PVT36G1600LLK)
Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD753LJ)

Delivery Tuesday.

Jon, is there anything I need to do in preparation for the build in terms of the softmod?

Hey man. You need to find a floppy drive, and a working floppy disk. It's possible to use dos on a usb stick but it just isn't worth the hassle involved.

There is some software involved. nvflash and nibitor are the big two. The former you put onto a dos bootable floppy disk, the latter is used to edit the bios of the graphics card. I believe you can use gpuz to copy the bios off the card, but I would recommend sticking with dos.

The process in brief is
Make bootable disk, boot from it and copy your bios off the graphics card.
Boot windows, save it to your hard drive.
Edit it using nibitor, rename it and copy it onto your floppy disk
Remove all graphics card drivers, reboot into windows, then
Boot from floppy, and issue a command similar to nvflash -4 -5 -6 new.bios
Hit y a couple of times, it'll write the new bios
Boot windows, install quadro drivers

So preparation is fairly limited. I'd download nibitor and have a play with it for a bit. You can download someone elses 8800gt bios, and a modified version of it from here: http://rapidshare.com/files/160384434/aquamac_Quadro_3700_Roms.zip open them and have a look around. In most respects they're the same. Note that the clock speeds are for an overclocked card in this example.
You then have the choice of setting appropriate speeds on the fx3700 bios from that link and flashing with that, or editing your bios to match the fx3700.
Either approach should lead to exactly the same result, I feel happier using a bios originally written for my card and slightly changed rather than a bios originally written for a different 8800 and changed in the same way.

Things are a bit more fun if you want to overclock the graphics card :)

No delivery today, slightly miffed. Phoned overclockers said ram out of stock but was in stock when ordered. Anyway they say I will get tomorrow but order has remained unchanged in my account.

Now I know what system I am getting, I would be most grateful if someone could list the prime bios settings to get the most out of the package I have.

Your efforts would be most appreciated. I am not going to have the time to do this as this kit is for the father in law

Also I intend to put the RC of Windows 7 64 bit on and wondered if I need a SATA driver on a floppy?

One boards bios settings wont work for another, seemingly identical board. It can only be a starting point at best, if you don't have time to overclock it I'm afraid it wont be overclocked. It'll be quick anyway though.

Windows doesn't need sata drivers, it only needs raid drivers. So you're good.

Nice hard drive :) I've got four of those, no problems yet

Having now built the system, I now want to be able to test the speed. What's currently the best benchmarking software. I have noticed that under System Settings and Properties in Windows 7 64 bit, there is no Ram information.

Depends rather. For cad, spec viewperf http://www.spec.org/download.html
It is an 800mb or so download, but it's very comprehensive.

Once it's installed, theres an option in the start menu to run all the tests at a choice of resolution. It'll take in the region of an hour to complete, during which you can't do much with your computer. it draws quite pretty things on the screen though. If you test at 1600 x 1200 I can offer my results for comparison.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for that, still just general set up tweeks at this stage.

Can you tell me why the Gigabyte utility from the CD is only showing 4gb of Ram as opposed to the 6 that are in? It is Windows 7 64 bit I have.

CPUz says 6144 MBytes

Absolutely no idea. I've never used gigabyte, and I'm still on core two quad. I also avoid windows as much as I can.

Could be faulty ram, but hopefully not. How much does the bios show, and does it pass memtest?

Found an 8800gt? Theres now another guy doing a cad build who's going down the same route, so soon I should have three sets of data to work from. I will know where the bottleneck in my system is soon, selfish hey :)

Having a problem with Riva 2.24 with Windows 7 64 bit. I found a fix which allows Foreceware 18585 to be put into the power setting. However, by doing this, there is still no low level setting tab where the NVStrap tab is.

Anyone got any ideas?

I can guarantee that the rivatuner method wont work with a new nvidia card :)

I know I'm quoting myself, but you were told that rivatuner wouldn't work for this. It hasn't worked since the 6800 series

Hence flashing the bios of the card instead. What're the stock clock speeds of your card? And is it 512mb or 1024? Let me know so I can set up the bios for you :)

Sorry Jon, I am a bit thick sometimes.

Here is the data;

As a separate issue, I have XP on a SATA Drive and I want to also have the Windows 7 on a second SATA. I have done what most people suggest and have XP first. Tomorrow I intend to connect the second SATA up to the Gigabyte and load it in. I am hoping to get a choice of which operating system to use when finished. Problem is I am not great with the bios set up with two SATA. There are white SATA and blue and I don't know whether I should put them on separate controllers or the same. I don't intend to RAID or anything.

Help appreciated
