New Pro-Engineer Job, looking to upgrade /new build existing PC.

Q6600 Go @ 3.2Ghz
6MB DDR2 ram
8800GT gfx
Gigabyte P35 DS3P M/B
OCZ 60GB SSD + 2TB F4 hdd

All good I guess, but ran this spec for while and finding Lightwave a bit slow to render on large scenes and viewport refresh slower than Id like.

New Job, want to upgrade my rig at home.
Saw this on OCUK, Workstation bundle, a good starting point?

Well tomorrow there will be proper AMD Bulldozer reviews and in a month or two there is intels high end sandybridge-e

Just wait a bit longer and save money then come back to see whats what.

What case and PSU do you have? makes and model numbers?

Is your DVD drive SATA or IDE?

Is SLI/Crossfire an option you may like in the future?

Being Z68 you get SSD caching/Lucid virtu and Quicksync.

The motherboard doesnt support SLI, you wont need it.

Then just add a graphics card, or you can use the CPU's built-in HD3000 GFX using the motherboards HDMI output, but a Nvidia card with CUDA support in programs will be faster.

Thats my shortlist right there...just add graphics card!

Will see how my 8800GT copes in its new plush home, will eventually retire it to the HTPC no doubt and get a Quadro for work stuff.

Sorry to thread hijack, but thank's stulid, im hovering over the buy button on a cheap 2500k upgrade and when I read that and checked in my current case I realalized my dvd reader in this old rigs IDE so will need a new one :)

If your using Pro-engineer you really want to be looking at one of the Workstation GFX card like the Quadro or FireGL. They will give you a much better boost in performance then any gaming card as they are designed specifically for the workstation role.

Also do you know if Pro-engineer is multi threading? If it's not the the i7 may not be the best option?

Just did a search and they say it can only use 1 core at a time so go for Clock speed. Maybe the i5 :)
 
The i7 2600K has a faster clock speed than the i5, 3.4Ghz vs 3.3GHz, it also has more L3 cache also.

Thats the same CPU, there is only one i7 2600K.

There are retail and oem versions.

Retail has - 3 year warranty, box and heatsink
Oem has - 1 year warranty and no box/heatsink.


Being a "K" CPU it has an unlocked multiplier meaning you can alter this value from its default 34X (34X100fsb/bclk = 3400Mhz) to say 40X and that gives you 4GHz using the stock intel heatsink.

For a higher overclock a aftermarket performance heatsink costing around £25 is desired.

Make sure its a "K" and not a i7 2600 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-359-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1859 - which you cant do much with as altering the 100MHz Bclck/fsb (whatever you want to call it) causes so many issues and is best left standard.

Just bought CPU, memory and Motherboard exactly like your suggestion.
Being doing som e reading on the components...great choice.
