Hey guys,

Great forums you've got here, I have a problem on one of my users PC's, wondering if anyone could help or has had come across this before.

On every boot I get the System Configuration Utility splash screen telling me I have used msconfig to make changes and that I'm running in diagnostics mode. However I'm not doing this, I try clicking on the check box to say dont display this screen again, go into msconfig and make sure I am not running in any diagnostic mode and make sure normal startup is set, I have not disabled anything else in the other tabs yet everytime the pc is rebooted the splash screen is back at every reboot - its driving me nuts!

Is there any other way to kill this screen? maybe from the registry? Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Ross

Unfortunately, when I tick the box and click ok the utility starts up by default! I've tried ticking the check box and pressing the red x but it still brings the utility up.

The only way I could avoid starting the utility up is to tick the box then end the task, I guess I could try that but I dont think it will work.

Cheers for the reply and welcome though! :)

PsiFox,

I'm doing a search for spyware now - msconfig is not in my startup folder and I followed your instructions to check everything in msconfig was enabled correctly but its still displaying the message.

I'm away from office till late next week so I'll see what the spyware scan comes up with and if I still have a prob I'll post back here or in a new thread then - thanks for your help so far anyway.

Cheers mate

Cobra,

Thanks for the reply... downloaded the script - run it - it said registry setting removed, rebooted.. its still there the screen comes back up like nothing has happened!!!!

This is insane.......

Yeah you're right - xp professional service pack 2.

I ran the script remover again just to make sure and it said the registry entry was no longer there so it definately got rid of it.

Where else can it be calling this screen from, it makes no sense

argh!! again, thanks for the help, thats a great app - it pointed me to the registry setting, I went in manually and deleted it with regedit but guess what, the ******* thing pops right back up on a reboot.

When I checked back in regedit the value I had deleted was back - The offending registry entry is in hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run I try and delete the "msconfig" value but every time I reboot it just reappears in the registry again.

Is there anyway I can stop the registry from reapplying the msconfig value after I reboot?? I dont care if I can never use msconfig on this pc again the user wants it gone!!!

OK.. its gone finally!!! :) :) :)

Not sure if it was because I wasn't logging on as administrator to make the registry alterations or if it was playing around with advanced permissions for registry keys but one of the two or a combination thereof has sorted it!!

psifox - nade - ric - cobra just want to say a big thanks to you guys for your helpful suggestions and advice, its really appreciated.

Cheers

Ross
