Hey guys, I need a bit of help with my computer which decided to die the first week of my new uni course (games computing) so I need it up and running again asap with minimal costs.

System spec:
Asus K8v deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
ATI x800
Thermaltake butterfly psu

When I switch the PC on I get nothing on my monitor, I have tried 2 different monitors so that is not the problem. All fans come on so there must be power but the little green led (one with the lightbulb) on the front of the case doesnt light up, the orange one next to it is on constantly. I also have the corsair ram with leds, one light on each just comes on and stays orange for a few seconds after I boot.. then it goes out.

I hope I have explained that clearly enough, any help you guys could offer me would be very useful!

Cheers

Could be a number of things, try ram sticks independantly in different slots.

Make sure you have the ram set to its spec speed or slower to be sure.

You get any beeps?.....

Tried clearing CMOS?

my pc has never beeped when I boots (that I can remember), and its not beeping now.. not sure if thats good or bad? I will try your ram idea later when i head back to my room. Thanks for your help, does anyone have any more ideas?

edit: I havnt cleared the CMOS, don't really know how tbh

Beeping used to be a gfx error. Clearing the CMOS is probably a simple jumper on the board you need to move and then move back

Too early and too little info to assume anything is dead yet, so ignore the other guy for now.

Try the different sticks, then if that doesnt help at all strip it down to essentials, as in unplug anything not required to boot, case fans, extra hard drives etc, this should lighten the load on the psu incase its at fault.

Could be an incorrectly seated component, heatsink, pci card etc.......

edit srry chief

Agreed, this is the best way to diagnose faulty components. It's a ball acher i know but it works. Check/replace those drive cables too.

Sounds like something simple, dont go over the top just yet, as said above firstly try and clear cmos, if you dont know how google your MB info, then try using your pc with just the essentials plugged in and listen for mobo beeps they are your friend.

at a guess right now id say your psu was to fault.

yeh run it with just the bare minimum hardware installed, including disconecting the optical drives and hard drive(s). Also if you have anyone that you know with a similar system ask if you can test your processor in they're PC...also if you have any spare RAM try it.

if you can try and get a working system speaker out of an old case and hook it upto your motherboard, this way you will be able to get beeps which would make it much easier to narrow down the problem as no graphical display when power up could be many things such as a fried processor, dodgy memory, fried motherboard, bad PSU, bad graphics card or even a dodgy expansion card fitted.

I don't know why we have people here that keep saying something is necessarily broken or fried, there's lots of little things that are easy to overlook that could cause problems.

So assumptions aside, look at the facts you have......

Its not always possible to swap parts with another PC for every person, so the aim here is to narrow down the problem enough to know its one or two parts, rather then just make radical assumptions, which in the end can be costly.

So lets wait and see what results we get from the suggestions so far....

And is it me, or is there and echo is this thread... ;)
