Hi,

My current pc has stopped working, the mobo is knackered. It was an e6400 + 4 gig ram and was a dell machine.

I am looking for a new Mobo, CPU, Memory, PSU and Case. i will add in 2 x 500GB HDD (sata) as well as an X-fi soundcard and a radeon 5770 (1gig) from my old system. I am using a 24" monitor with G15 keyboard.

I really am out of the loop on what to get. We have just had a new baby so money is pretty tight, i have a budget between £400 and £500.

Any suggestions really appreciated.

following is new parts, could work cheaper if you were okay with things from the b-grade.

do you need to get mobo/cpu/memory or would you be okay with keeping the e6400/ddr2 ?

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £86.94 (£73.99)

AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 555 3.20GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail £76.36 (£64.99)

Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AMD 785G (Socket AM3) DDR3 microATX Motherboard £66.99 (£57.01)

Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) £59.98 (£51.05)

Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower Case - Black Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower Case - Black £26.99 (£22.97)

Sub Total : £270.01
Shipping : £11.75
VAT : £49.31
Total : £331.07

The e6400 is getting a bit long in the tooth and the memory isn't the quickest so replacing them all is the best bet. Cheers

not trying to talk you out of it, but as you say money is tight what you had still isnt too bad as a basic system, is there anything in particular it was slow handling ?

I'm personally not keen on b-grade items as they are reconditioned or opened boxes sometimes missing items. As long as you are aware of this, it is still an option.

I have just recently recommended that CPU for another budget build (i have one myself). You would have to double check but I think that mobo suggested can unlock cores (google phenom II unlocking). There is a chance that the X2 processor could be unlocked to an X4, would be wise to buy an aftermarket heatsink as the stock one will struggle with the extra heat from the additional cores.

That spec mp suggested combined with the parts you want to reuse would make a nice lil rig. I'd recommend another heatsink, even if the cpu cant be unlocked you can overclock it to 3.8GHz easy.

Good luck with the build

£331 is a great price. The reason moneys tight is i'm visiting my parents in Cyprus in a few weeks to see the new baby so it's gonna come out of my spending money.

However the wife is nagging me to get it done as she says i'm a real pain in the arse without my PC and continually borrowing her laptop instead.

I can stretch to £500 max but that price is excellent, so just a better heatsink for overclocking is all that is needed on top.

Yip the arctic freezers are a popular choice and reasonably cheap too. I used a coolmaster tx3 but they are very similar.

What mp said does make sense. I just built a htpc to reuse 6GB of DDR2 that was gathering dust. That lil cpu is well worth the money although i paired it with an am2+ mobo.

Good luck with the build, may you be a lucky one who can unlock to an X4

aside from the cooler, for an extra £40 you could move up to the 955 quad core.

just depends what your thinking of spending your money on when you go to cyprus :D.

Well the wife and 2 kids are also coming so just alcohol to cope with staying with the parents for 2 weeks :p

Is the quad worth it for an extra £40?

Well yes and it comes with a better stock heatsink so technically it's only £20 more if you were going with the 555BE and an aftermarket heatsink.

Many people use aftermarket heatsinks but the stock one would be sufficient unless you are going to overclock.

i would say it is, and its still under your orginal budget of £400-500 :).

ahh stick with the first processor then you'll need that extra £40 :D j/k
