i just bought a new 250gb usb2 HD and have transfered over all my pics/music etc to it. i then defragged it with disckeeper and all looked well, but then it just started ticking over, accessing the HD while the PC wasnt doing anything to require any sort of HD read/write. curious i rescanned it using disckeeper and now i see a load of system files have been added to it? anyone know why that is? iv turned of system restore so its nothing to do with that as far as im aware.

cheers in advance for any help.

Could be the indexing service. Right click on the drive and pick properties, down at the bottom of the window there's a check box for indexing, this is likely on.

well iv just checked that and it was ticked so i removed it and rescanned with disckeeper and nothing has changed so i dont think it was that? any other ideas?

In explorer, goto tools > folder options and click the view tab, scroll down to and uncheck Hide protected system files then you should be able to see what the system files are. I'm pretty sure they're useless JPG and INI files that Windows Media Player makes.

yeh i already tried that but i only found two very small hidden files which wouldnt take up the amount of space these files are taking up, so im abit lost.
