Hi guys,

I am having some instability issues at the moment with my system and i want to try and find out what is the cause of it.

I am running everything at stock speeds so overclocking is not the issue here.

One thing to note is that on boot sometimes my USB mouse is not initialised properly. Also, both CD-Rom drives are being a bit funny, and i have recently had an IDE drive that has failed on me.

Is it likely to be the Motherboard? What tests can i do to find out if it is the CPU, memory, or power supply?

Cheers all

disconnect power to anything not needed to start the system , cd drives, spare hard drives etc.

try 1 stick of memory and see if that works ok.

google for memtest and run it.

Yep, specs would help.

Okay, from memory...

Amd 64 Venice 3Ghz 939
Epox 9NPA+Ultra
2 x 1GB Corsair Value
GeForce 6800 Ultra
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ST3250401AS SATA-II
Pioneer 116 DVD
LiteOn CD Burner
Compro DVB-T220
Realtek 8180L Wifi 802.11 B
Creative 56k modem (gotta be safe)

I thinking thats about right. Oh and i am running Vista x64 Ultimate with all the latest signed drivers.

cant see a psu listed.

as mentioned memtest the memory and strip the system down to a minimum and see if it still has a problem.

I can't remember off the top of my head what the PSU is, though it isn't a named jobbie, bit of a generic pos.

The issues are, general CD/DVD access issues. USB Mouse sometimes not initialising properly on boot (unplug and reinsert sort it though). Oh and the good old blue screen of death.

When i get home tonight, i shall try stripping the machine down of CD burner/modem/tv card and see what happens.

Okay, i have finally got around to testing this. I have first just unplugged the cd burner to see if i can install bf2 without blue screening, and so far so good.

Once this is installed i will plug it back in and try and run bf2.

I think maybe there isnt enough power in the PSU.

Would a change in OS draw more juice? I'm sure i didnt have this problem in XP, mind you i did get a new tv card just before i dumped xp. At the same time, i hooked up with the mrs so i havent really been playing any games.

I wonder

Hmm, well it hasn't been buggering around now. I even managed to hook up my gramps old disk drive so i could image it and then shred the disk before passing it on to a charity. Recently every time i tried to do that i would get strange disk access issues. Now, this time i made sure i unplugged the cd and dvd drives and i was able to do the task without disk problems.

Very strange.

For the spec displayed above, what sort of wattage should i be looking at?
