System locking up

I have built a aOpen MiniPC running Vista. Works well and then suddenly locks up with curious checkerboard/boxes on the monitor. After that no response and only way to restart is to hold power button down for several seconds and restart it. Her indoors is getting slightly annoyed and threatening me with violence over it. I have updated the video drivers.

Any other suggestions??

what are you doing when it happens?
is there anything in the event viewer?

It seems random perhaps when using more graphic intensive programs. Not sure about the event viewer - the system has to be rebooted once it happens?

check the viewer and see what it says.

I have looked in event viewer and it just reports the improper shut down - nothing about the cause?

Intel for the chipset.

I'd go with overheating if you're getting artifacts on the screen, may be worth opening her up and checking the board.
