system pausing

Hi,

i've just built a new system with the following;
Silvrstone sugo
E8500
DFI p45-tr2s jr MATX
ATI 4870
2GB ballistix 1066

Now every or so minutes when installing software or on the web the system just stops and pauses for about a minute. Then suddenly the hardrive can be heard to kick back in and everything starts working again... Does anyone know what this might be?

I can still move the cursor around but can't click on anything. Could it be because The motherboard has the 800mhz RAM bios version? I haven't found the right bios version to flash it with yet for my 1066 RAM

Sorry, vista x64

Could it be my raptor giving up perhaps? Windows memory diagnostics finds no errors

Don't press the pause button

 :o

My setup did this

M2N32-SLI Deluxe, with Vista 64. It was a borked chipset driver installation; the whole system would just stop and then resume again in a couple of seconds. In the end I had to reformat Vista to get it to work properly again.

You know what.. I did install my chipset a little later than a little later than a lot of my other software... actually a good few hours after i put programs on. Perhaps a reformat is best?

Change Vistas power settings so that it doesn't power down your hard drives.

i did have the RAM undervolted so I've put it up to 2V - trying this now

Running lots of windows and no pauses....

ok so it wasn't the memory. have now selected the 'high performance' power plan - lets see how she goes

I'm pretty sure its the HD - no random seeks or anything when it pauses. Changed hard drive option on power plan to never power down

I think it's worked, time will tell! Will post back in bit.

My other issue was trying to set the Memory to 1066 as the board didn't have this option but I set it to the 333/800 option which has made it 1001 which is close enough I guess

I think this problem has gone. I get the odd pause when using firefox but I think that could just be the effect of doing so many things in lots of windows and only using 2GB perhaps?

try the driver solution that I mentioned before :)

Uninstall all chipse drivers and serial ATA drivers etc, then try installing them again.

Thanks, tried that I'm afraid. Did a reformat and fresh install and did them first on list.

Having said that it hasn't done it in a while. i did have a lot of windows updates running at the time. mindless optimism perhaps but perhaps something has taken effect.

At the moment I'm using a 74gb raptor - no errors detected in HD tune

But it's too loud so I've ordered a 250GB western digital just to put my OS on and local files

On one of my systems with a raptor, I get a small delay, then a click from a drive literally half a second, then everything is fine again. I have never figured out what casues that issue :(
