System random power offs

Hi all, I have a problem thats developed over the last few days.

My system has an Asus P5K, C2D E6850, 4GB Ram, 8800GTX and is running Vista 64. NOT OVERCLOCKED (SORRY)

Every now and then the system just shuts off, the screen goes blank and it appears to have gone into standby, there is still power to the mobo and fans are running but thats all. I am having to turn it on and off at the wall to then be able to turn it back on. It actually did reboot on its own earlier after waiting about 5 minutes, very strange.

I am wondering is it the power supply, graphics card, software problem but I do not have a clue.

The most recent change was the IE7 security patch.

The only other possible clue is that when it restarted on its own everything was very laggy as if the memory was low and a programme did abort saying that free memory was too low during one of the recent power off issues. I do have 4 GB of ram though so this seems strange.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this laptop is not as much fun to use!!

Its not temps as I am running no intensive apps and its in my garden office which is not the warmest place on earth at this time of year. Actually could very cold overnight temps hurt at all?

PSU is a Corsair VX450 so although not overly powerful it is a quality unit in my opinion.

I am running Kaspersky and the Vista firewall etc that all gets regularly updated.

It is very intermitant (sp) which is perlpexing.

Sounds like it could be your PSU or even dodgy memory.

Can you possibly take out some of your memory and swap them about to see if you have a bad stick?

Have you another PSU you could use?

OK here's the latest........

Tried swapping memory modules around ie. 2x1gb sticks in alternate slots etc with no improvement.

Tried disconnecting all ancilarys with no improvement.

Started to do a fresh install of Vista 64 and it crashed again so prob not a software driver issue.

Now exchanged my XFX 8800GTX for a crappy Radeon 300 out of a Dell and its in the process of running memtest to check the ram.

Been running a while now with no problems.

So it could be either the GFX or the PSU.

Could the PSU suddenly develop a problem with the load as its been fine for around 6 months.

Is it common for XFX 8800 GTX cards to develop faults.

Any advice appreciated.

Its doing it again

I've just ordered a Corsair TX650 PSU to see if that helps at all.

I'm pretty sure its not the memory or Gfx card causing the problem.

If it persists after the new PSU then I suppose the mobo could be the problem.

Any thoughts............

OK still trying to understand this problem.

I have not got the new PSU yet.

I did manage to reinstall Vista64 and the system does boot up most of the times I have tried it. It just dies every now and then for no obvious reason, it can be whilst I am using it or just sitting idle.

The screen goes blank closely followed by what appears to be the creen looking for either an analogue or digital input and then it all poiwers off completely.

A few times it has then jusy powered back on again.

I did notice that if I move the case it sometimes powers back on, could this ne a dodgy connection perhaps.

Any ideas anyone.........

My only other thought is that it could be the harddisk giving up the ghost although I am clutching at straws here.

A couple of times when it has powered back on, the OS is still running and at the point it was at prior to the power down.

This is all so intermittent that I cannot see a real pattern.
