System restarting

Hello all,

I recently decided to change my CPU cooler. Having done so, my computer powered on yet none of my peripherals worked, and my monitor signal wasn't showing.

I reseated everything, including my CPU and the cooler, and now my computer is powering down after around 4 seconds, during which there's a faint scratching kind of noise every second until it shuts down.

It continues this cycle indefinitely until I power off manually. I've checked the CPU and there's no sign of any damage.

I was just wondering what could have caused this problem? I've built my computer again from scratch and the problem still persists.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks guys.

It wasn't necessarily an upgrade, the old one was clogged with dust so I replaced it with one I had laying around; a coolermaster copper sphere.

What do you mean by fouling? I really appreciate your help, btw!

fouling, could the fan be hitting anything on the board? heatsink?

the old one was clogged with dust? try taking a small paint brush or toothbrush to it, give it a small clean and try using that one,

*edit*
just read a review for your cooler, i'd buy a better one soonish, the fan is 3 pin, not PWM controlled, meaning it wont ramp up in timing with cpu loads ;)

CAn you go into more detail?

Cleaning of thermal paste....how you reapplied the paste. That noise could well be a cable catching the fan as it spins down.

If you can tell us a bit more we can help you more ;p

I've cleaned it now, replaced it back in and the problem still stands. I unplugged the HDD, which was causing the scratching sound because it seems to have stopped.

Might seem like an obvious problem but did you apply thermal paste?

Also check you seated the cooler properly.

I applied thermal paste, however the paste I'm using is around 2 years old.. does it make a difference?

Now I feel like an idiot.. rubbed it off with my finger and took the rest off with a cloth *sigh*

I applied the paste in little bits and evenly spread with my finger. Reading over articles trying to solve this problem suggested I use one line down the middle for my CPU (Q6660) and let the rest be evenly distributed by the compression of my CPU cooler, would this make a difference? I don't think I have much left to spare..

spread with a finger? i do hope that you done that on the heatsink and not the cpu it's generally not considered wise to touch the face of a cpu, static charge up and all that, you can kill a cpu doing it.

Applied it to the CPU.. but I was wearing a grounded wristband so surely static wouldn't have caused this problem?

The first time around I applied to the CPU and nothing was destroyed..

in future it'd be better to put a small dot in the middle of the cpu or draw a line across it then apply the heatsink and let that spread it across ;)

maybe you have put too much pressure on the cpu.. i.e. put the heat sink on too hard.

other than than does the sound def come from the hd rather than the gpu ?

check all plugs... you can just start afresh. take everything out and put it in as if it was a new one, i.e. make sure that you have no mistakes.

also get another TIM yours maybe 2 years old, but it might not be the best one now. try mx3 or similar newer paste.

you could do, but does your mobo support an old P4? what mobo are you running? the socket will fit if it's a socket 775 but the TDP might not match

Sound definitely comes from the HDD, as I unplugged and now there's just the sound of the fans starting.

I took everything out, reseated it all and the problem still occurs, at one point the thing wouldn't even turn on though.

It's an ASUS P5k.

Tried the P4 chip, still the same problem.

I re-applied the thermal paste to the Q6600, and still no difference. I've tried without my GFX card and it still restarts.. so PSU?

Or do you reckon there's a wire loose that's shorting?
