Having always disabled system restore with all my installations of XP I have just used it to get out of a tight spot on a friends computer.

This got me thinking...

Should i be using system restore? Obviously it poses a problem when a system is infected by a virus but are there any serious down sides to it apart from disk space?

Also, dare i use it in a business environment? We have several small clients that do not backup the configuration of their workstations, so i'm thinking it could be an ideal condidate for helping with recovering system configuration when a user dables in areas where they shouldn't.

Any thoughts on the subject are appreciated

Even the thinnest of clients should have enough disk space to hold a few restore points so there's no reason for you not to have another help at hand for those unfortunate people who press buttons without reading messages.

I leave it on as set during an XP installation for all clients in the office and I've used it 3 or 4 times in the last two years and it was very helpful.

Note that you only get up to two months of restores so if you want to wind a client back to a nice fresh just installed point then use imaging software.

system restore has got my comp back up and running when it should have been a complete reinstall! many a time (pre 2003-4).....virus's and malware have prob made inroads into intergrating themselves with restore points by now!

but id recommend getting some backup software and creating a backup image to be able to restore your computer! ....it can save you reactivating your "oem" windows os and installing all your programs!

cheap at half the price!!!
