System Shock 2 Should I play it ?

See my post /re dual core. With Kolya's SS2Tool you don't need to mess with the dual core stuff - it'll sort it for you.

In /re to buying it. eBay is your best bet, or apparently there's a shop in Australia that sells it as new still. Those are the only legal means of getting hold of it about these days...

Yeah. Up to 4 players can play co-op over LAN or WAN. I wouldn't recommend it for your first time through as you'll miss out on some of the atmosphere of the game (that said, it's perfectly possible/enjoyable to co-op straight off).

I didn't really enjoy co-op, detracted too much from the atmosphere. Personally, I don't like a lot of the new textures, they're very nice and higher res, but just don't look as scary! Specifically the midwife, and hybrids. most of the others are pretty good though, like the dead crew members etc.

One of, if not THE best game I've ever played. Just reading this thread has evoked memories and emotions from playing it the first time round. Recommended.

Well, that's a Rebirth issue rather than SHTUP (SHTUP just replaces object textures for the most part and remains as original as possible). A lot of people agree with you /re the Midwife, hence the Rebirth Complemented pack replaces the midwife skin with the original :) Other changes in there too, making it far better than the original Rebirth release.

Got this with most the mods on. But it just feels too old and clunky, i'm also not feeling scared/imersed either, i'm up to the point where you find the first chemical cupboard thing. Reckon i should persevere? Does it get better?

One of my favourite games of all time.

Get the rebirth texture pack, turn the lights down and get some headphones on.

You will almost definitely crap yourself playing this game. Genuinely disturbing and scary.

definately if you like fps mixed with rpg. i didnt get very far, but a lot of people told me its the scariest/tense game theyve played. i thought it was far from that, and found doom a lot more tense. but whatever. its still good :p

Medium is easy, Hard is moderate. Even Imposible isn't really that hard. Use Hard first time through.

Well to be honest, it depends on which career route you take. Hard is ok if you go Navy, but a damn sight harder if you go psi-corp or whatever it's called.

Go Navy first time through and you'll be fine.

I didn't have too much trouble finishing it on impossible as the psi character. That's third time through though :)

It's not really fair to judge it 9 years after release. The graphics were obviously much more impressive when it first came out. Also as said previously you need to play it in the dark, at night, with the volume up (or even on headphones), and on a CRT really since the rubbish black depth on LCDs rather ruins the atmosphere in dark games, and with the in-game brightness not too high.

It's not scary in the Doom 3 sense of making you jump (a cheap trick btw which Doom 3 used over and over), rather it makes you feel hunted and tense, nervous and not safe. Also helps to play it on the right difficulty (hard).
