System shutting itself down playing BF2...

For some reason my system has started shutting itself down when playing BF2. It doesn't do it in any other game but this may just be due to BF2 taxing my graphics card the most.

What is strange though is that it only just started doing it and I have been playing BF2 (on the same settings) since last July. It can happen after an hour or after 10mins. I suspect it may be a heat problem but am not sure.

(I've tried 5 different drivers and everything in my system is at stock)

The card is a x850XT PE

Any ideas?

I'm wondering if it is PSU related......gaming puts quite a load on......I know I experienced occasional shutdowns under load (eg gaming) with my previous 'no name' PSU and bought a Hiper Type R and have never had and issues

If nothing has genuinely changed (not even drivers?) then it could be something as simple as a buildup of dust inside your case causing temperatures to gradually increase.

What temp should my GPU be?

It's currently 57C and i've just turned it on from cold. However, it gets up to just under 100C when gaming for a bit.

Uhh 100C is pretty damn hot by the way, I think it could be over heating somewhere along the line.

100c is way too hot even for a gpu. Sounds like you need to do some spring cleaning in that pc.

My zalman HSF is excellent but it also collects all the dust it possibly can, if I dont clean it out every few weeks then temps start rising.

Does it actually switch itself off, or just reboot. Get that gpu temp down, just underclocking it to test would be easy but if that doesnt fix it then it might be the psu, speedfan will show the voltage charts while playing. Ati Tools will even relay that info during the game

Have to agree with the above here.
Not the same card here but an X800Pro@pe with an AC fitted.
I have learnt to take mine completely out my system regularly and clear the dust out. It's unreal in there all clogged up and nasty. Using new paint brushes i gently clean it up and bring it back to mint condition with a little distant hoovering.
Tidy the inside of your case while you are at it aswell. The main thing for me over everything else that reduced temps for me was the tidy up. Get those cables/leads out the way and create and in the front out the back airflow with minimal hiderances.
Jobs a good'en. :)

The last time I used an X850 series for video it was ~40ºc idle and ~60ºc under full load. Overheating is most definitely your problem here. Battlefield 2 is a pretty stressful game when played with eye-candy turned on.

Take the card out and give the cooler a good clean and blow, you shouldn't need to take it off, but these things go insane when full of dust. Failing that, the Zalman VF900-CU is the best aftermarket cooler available right now. :)
