System suddenly rebooted

Hi everyone,

My system suddenly rebooted today whilst gaming, with no apparent reason. This is the first time I've had this happen on this system, which I've had for well over a year and I'm a little puzzled as to why it happened. Initially I thought it was a household power surge, but nothing else lost power, just my comp.

The game I was playing was barely taxing the system and I've since played the same game again and stress tested the system with no issue. My system has always beencompletely stable and I'm using a decent PSU (EVGA P2 850w).

Is this anything to be concerned about or just a freak occurrence? Only thing I can think of is that it could have been a power surge on just that power socket (or something like that).

Is there anything I can do to determine the cause?

If it happens again you could check event viewer. Other than that I wouldn't worry too much as long as it doesn't happen again.

Only times ive ever had it reeboot is ...dust.

serious dust, some compressed air and all good :)

Didn't think of that but it's too late now as I have just replaced the PSU completely. After I made original post it happened again, then two more times after that, each time whilst gaming. When it rebooted there was absolutely no indication of anything wrong, it would just sporadically reboot. Sometimes I could go for several hours with no problem, then other suddenly out of nowhere it would reboot.

The PSU in question was a EVGA P2 850w unit. I've had this for around 6 to 8 months with zero issues and all of sudden this. In any case the reboots were getting more frequent so I firstly decided to swap out the graphics card, but the reboots still happened.

After trying out a few other things with no luck I replaced the PSU for a Corsair AX760 and the problem seems to have been fixed as far as I can tell, no reboots. Hopefully it was just PSU and nothing else as it would be a total pain having to replace the motherboard for example.

I've heard good things about EVGA customer support, time to test it out!

when you think the psu is the main switch for everything to work - the heart, and they do get intermittent faults or break down altogether. So a reboot would point that way, where bsod...... mainly point at mem, heat, driver
