So my GPU savants here is my little problem which l think can only be cured with a fresh OS install.

With my single card fitted all is well (R9 290P flashed to X), however once l fit my R9 290P stock l get:

system thread exception not handled windows 8.1 atikmdag.sys amd.

This happens just after getting past log in screen, sometimes before l can even log in.

I have used DDU and have installed 14.9, 14.9.1 and 14.9.2 all have the same symptoms.

So either my second card has gone U/S (can check on my other rig)

Or l require either to refresh my W8.1, reinstall W8.1 or install W7P,

Card temps are all fine, the R9 290 fitted has a H55 fitted to it and the VRM have heatsinks etc.

So what are your thoughts?

Regards

C.

Just about to fit my original R9 290 to my other system and give it a run, will update once done.

Well quick update, my original R9 290 will boot with no drivers installed, as soon as you try and install drivers, artifacts all over screen then system freezers.

Looks like she has gone the way of the dodo.

Meh.

Well last gasp to see if the card was U/S l installed W7 on a spare SSD, and again got the drivers failing to install with the R9 290P fitted, screen went corrupt and computer locked up, on reset is booted to a black screen :(

So this happens on two separate systems, running just the one card? If so then I can safely say its an RMA jobby.

Flip the Bios switch on the card, see if the backup bios is any better. Anyways it does sound borked. Id start raising an RMA.

Some things to check anyways;

Flip the Bios switch on the card, see if the backup bios is any better.
Different pci slot
PSU (try different wires, or even better a different PSU)
Memtest? maybe, probably not worth it but there we go.

Cheers for the feed back, aye have already done this and till no joy, moving the card from one system has shown both PSU's good, one is a SF 1300W and the other is a EVGA 750W G2 also has ruled out the PCI-E slots being goosed as R9 290X and GTX780 work in these slots.

Again no need for memtest as both systems run fine with respective R9 290X and GTX 780 fitted.

RMA has been requested.
