Hi everyone,

Does any have any experience of Maya or Arnold renderers?

I've been asked to help upgrade a PC that is feeling a bit '"laggy".

The current specs are:

i3 (10th gen)
Geforce GTX 1060
16GB Ram

All running on a B460M mobo with a Corsair CV550 PSU and with a 512gb SSD.

I've been told that budget isn't an issue but doesn't need to be high end, just a bit of an upgrade.

I was thinking of bumping up the CPU to an i7 but not sure what would be suitable for graphics card or memory requirements?

For the rendering aspect, it's for a young lad just starting out in college doing Computer Animation, so he don't need studio grade performance, just capable.

Any ideas?

Thank you :)

My suggestions after a quick search:

CPU to Intel Core i7 or i9
NVIDIA RTX 3070, 3080, 3080 Ti or 4090
At least 32GB RAM, preferably 64GB, fast DDR5
1TB SSD

It probably would be best to get a budget from them, because then you can evaluate "bang for buck". There's always a sweet spot in terms of performance vs cost.

Thanks, I'll probably float a couple of options and see where we go from there.

I didn't really want to go down the i9 option as I think that would possibly warrant an upgrade to the mobo and additional cooling. I don't think the i5 would be a big enough step up so that's why I initially landed on the i7.

I'm currently thinking i7, 64gb Ram and then an appropriate gfx card.

Can you ask them to run task manager while it is "laggy" and check what is being pushed to 100%? Failing that, some more details about when the lag occurs (i.e. what is being done with the PC in those moments?).

Difficult to know where to put the money nowadays, since so many programs use/can use the GPU where they didn't before.

Is the 512GB SSD being used for storing everything, e.g. there's no external HDD or something like that, that is being used for project storage?
