Hi All,

Have been given the option today of upgrading my rig which is currently as follows:

DFI 975x/g 775 mobo
Q6600 go 1.125 vid
4gb ocz

I have a budget that work have given me of £250 and am thinking the following might be a good bet

MSI 870a-g54 AM3
AMD 1055T X6
4gb Corsair XMS3

Total cost £250.74

I guess the other options could be sandy bridge? I use it for all sorts from coding to my Sharepoint VM's etc...

Thoughts before I press the go button please.

I don't think there is sufficient benefit from a G0 Q6600 (Which I presume you have overclocked?) to the 1055T - although RAM becomes cheaper.

If it was me, I'd chuck in the extra £50-80 and go for a 2500K or even consider putting it aside until Ivybridge comes along if you run a lot of VMs.

the GO q6600 sits at 3ghz day in day out. Obviously I will be overclocking anything I get my greasy mits on. Just priced up a sandy bridge and it works out an extra £50.

Actually, for VMs etc he'll make full use of the 6 cores, and the 1055t can reach around 3.8GHz easily enough - will wipe the floor with a Q6600 for his uses I'd image.

I agree with waiting for IvyBridge though - you'll have more money then, and we'll have a better idea of AM3+ and how that compares.

I will be ordering today so wont be waiting for IvyBridge or anything else. Budget is not a strict budget but would like to stick in the £250 to £300 area.

How does this look for a SB build?

Intel Core i5 2300 2.8GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache retail Box Processor
MSI H67MA-E45 H67 Socket 1155 GB Lan 8 Channel HD Audio MATX Motherboard
Kingston 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Memory Kit 1.65V non-ECC CL9

Or is the 1.65v memory pushing it?

Ok I think I am going to go for the X6 1055t but am now not sure on the board, whats the best chipset for clocking these hex cores?

IT looks bad.

SB is dual channel - so you need 2x2GB sticks of ram :p

I would be looking at:

Foxconn P67A-S
4GB Geil PC-128000
i5 2500

Much better motherboard - will allow 8x/8x Crossfire. Only problem is you can't overclock the system as its a non-"k" series chip.

Depends on budget, but 8XX is the way to go now.

Try for 880 or 890GX/FX if you can push the budget.

Ok have two threads open because im a noob, but are any of these two half decent?

Asus M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 880G
Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H 880GA

Apart from the memory you can't overclock it either. To oveclock a SB you need a "K" series cpu and you only overclock with the unlocked multiplier.

Ok think im settled on the following:

Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H 890GX Socket AM3 HDMI DVI VGA Out 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz 9MB Cache Socket AM3 Retail Box Processor

2X Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 i5 Memory Kit CL9(9-9-9-24) 1.65V

As a side, I could add a bit extra and go 1090t is it worth it?

Ok so this is what I ended up with:

Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H 890GX Socket AM3 HDMI DVI VGA Out 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition

2X Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 i5 Memory Kit CL9(9-9-9-24) 1.65V

Is that what you bought?
Not bad at all, I would have swapped the ram to Geil stuff but there really is no difference :p

Yep thats what I went with, It will be here tomorrow so am looking forward to it :) Thanks for the help btw.

Was so close to clicking the go button on the 1100T but thought that there will be little difference between the 1090 and the 1100.

Have had an intel system now for the last 5 years so am looking forward to playing with some amd stuff again :)

Big difference actually :p
1100T can overclock to 4.2GHz - never seen a 1090T go that high :D

Ahh well for a free upgrade I can't really complain. Just doubling up the ram and the new processor should make a fair difference when im running several VM's and even if it makes no difference when gaming, well... im not overly fussed I was happy enough with my Q6600 and 5850 @ 5760x1080.

to be fair if I can hit 4ghz ill put a massive grin on my face kick back and do a few laps on f1 2010 :)
