Hi All,

I've been out of touch with pc components for a while and was looking for some advice. I built my current pc in 2010 and I am looking to upgrade for BF4. I don't have to max out the settings, just to play on med/high at 1080p.
The problem I'm having is that either my motherboard or cpu has been faulty for years allowing me only to run one stick of ram. I'm lazy and haven't fixed it. So I reckon I'll need a new motherboard no matter what. These are my components:

  • CoolerMaster Hyper TX3 Cooler LGA775/1156/AM2/AM3
  • Gigabyte GTX 460 OC 1GB GDDR5 OC Edition Dual DVI HDMI PCI-E
  • Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM Caviar Blue
  • G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V (only running 4gb)
  • Asus M4A87TD/USB3 870 Socket AM3 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
  • OCZ Stealth Xstream II 600W PSU - 3x SATA 2x PCI-E
  • AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Socket AM3 3.2 GHz 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Do you reckon my current gfx card has enough grunt? I'd like to upgrade as cheaply as possible. £100-£200. Even 2nd hand components if need be.

Thanks for your help

Yeah you certainly need a new motherboard a CPU..

If you can grab a 2500k or 3570k secondhand (for around £100-£130). You can grab one of these OCUK clearence motherboards (Z68 is sandybridge only, as the new drivers may not be on them).

YOUR BASKET
1 x **B Grade** Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £55
1 x **B Grade** Asus P8Z68-V PRO Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 (MB-457-AS) £50
Total : £115.50 (includes shipping : £8.75).

But then you really need a new GPU too.. (but i'd do the CPU/motherboard upgrade first..

The RAM issue is a motherboard issue.

I managed to get a cheap Gigabyte 970A-DS3P and installed my phenom in there until i buy a AMD FX8350. It's now using all 8gb which is nice!

Everything is fine with my build apart from the fps in Metro Last Light seems a great deal lower than with my previous motherboard with 4gb ram. Is there any reason for this?

Nvidia Driver 331.65
