System-wide adblocker for Android? (no root)

I use a Pi-Hole at home which blocks ads on all of my devices at the router level. (for more info about Pi-Hole, check the Linux forum on Overclockers).

When I'm out though, the ads re-appear and they are a drain on the battery. It's unnecessary. I'm talking mainly inside of games as opposed to web browsers. Just killing 20 minutes on my commutes etc.

Does anyone here use an adblocker that doesn't require root? A friend of mine has 1Block which looks ideal but it's iOS only.

I'm using DNS66 and it works pretty well: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.jak_linux.dns66/

You do however need to whitelist a few apps (eg downloading from Chrome won't work unless you whitelist the download app), so the way I've set it for now is to whitelist everything by default and then I manually blacklist any apps with bad ads.

You can also add host files. I've added Adguard's mobile filter list on top of the default ones and seems to do a better job.

If playing a game for 20 minutes drains your battery significantly it sounds like you might have another problem.

Also, paying the people who worked hard to make those games is absolutely not unnecessary. If you don't like the business model then don't install them, there are plenty of games you can pay for upfront instead to play on a 20 minute commute.

@ Orcvader - 1 day on, and it's to confirm that the F-Droid and DNS66 works a treat, so many thanks!

DNS66 is on the Google Play store, but to warn you guys - it's a fake. A rogue developer has simply name-squatted.

@ Em3bbs - ah now :p I have white-listed apps that use lighter ads e.g. AccWeather. Lots of apps I pay for anyway. However, for resource hogs, it's curtains I'm afraid. After all, I am the customer and have capacity, and I can make my own choices. If the devs want their ads showing, then use better choice of ads in your apps, m'kay.
