System will only boot using onboard graphics

Hi

I have just finished building a new rig with items recommended by the team here. I have the following new items

Intel i5 2500K LGA1155
ASUS P8Z68-V Pro Mobo
4gb of XMS3 Ram
OCZ Stealth Xtreme 11 600W PSU

I have added my graphics card Radeon 5770.

The problem i have is the system will only boot using the onboard graphics.

Any help would be great as it is driving me nuts!!

Does the system POST, or does nothing happen when you press the on switch?

The fans spin but nothing gets through to the monitor and eventually the system turns itself off. Incidently when i boot the system i never get any beeps at all?

Have you got access to another system you can test the card in, or is it a known working card?

I took this card straight from my current system which i am using now and it worked fine in my old rig

Could be the PSU. Might not have enough power.

The user guide states it is in the correct slot?

Have you connected the 6 pin power connector to the 5770?

The GPU usually goes in the top PCI-E slot.

Sometimes on a motherboard any expansion slot can be faulty. If you try it in a different slot and it works, then you know you have a faulty motherboard.

This was the PSU i was recommended so it should bge sufficient (at least i hope so or i've wasted a wack of money!)

PSU is more than powerful enough.

Don't worry the PSU will be able to power it, unless it's a faulty PSU, but then I would imagine the whole system wouldn't boot rather than just when with the graphics card.

I have tried in both slots, ensuring power is connected but nothing. The system appears to boot up but nothing to the monitor

No, i use an old monitor when i build a new rig. I keep my old system as is so i can use it for problem solving such as this. The monitor i use when building is an old 14" CRT.

Have you changed the primary display adapter to PCIE in bios?

Does that motherboard have a built in speaker, or do you have one in your case? If not, that is why you will not get any bios beeps.
