^^ that was what I was going to say - my last system wouldn't boot if the onboard graphics were enabled... same with my current board, if the onboard audio is enabled, the board won't use my audigy...
AFAIK, If you have iGPU selected, then you should plug the monitor into the motherboard, not the graphics card. Could be the Display Virtualisation thing. Or change the graphics settings in the bios (probably PCIE / PCI).
Problem solved, it would appear my graphics card was too powerful for the old monitor. As soon as i plugged into my normal screen there was no problem.

Thinking about it, it could have course be the vga connector on the card is duff as the better monitor works of the DVI connector. As i won't be using the old vga connector again i'm not bothered.
It was an ancient 14'' CRT With these new UEFI bios and such, I wouldn't be surprised if it tried switching to some form of graphics display settings or a high refresh rate.
