I can't get my pc to boot up at all, i press the power switch and everything starts up for half a second and then it powers off again and it repeats this over and over until i unplug it.

It all started when i noticed the plastic bit in the middle of one of the usb ports on the front of the case was missing and one of the pins was bent.

I turned the pc off so i could have a look to see if i could fix it but once it was off it kept turning itself back on until i switched it off at the wall.

This has been happening ever since. I unplugged the front usb panel, tried clearing the cmos, nothing worked. Is my motherboard or PSU most likely dead?

Specs are:

CPU- 3570K
Mobo-Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
PSU- Corsair HX 750W
Ram- 8gb Samsung Green

Edit: Removed everything except the CPU, still the same problem. I also noticed that if i leave it to keep switching on and off it will occasionally stay on for longer, about 5-10 seconds, before switching off again.

Hmm it definitely seems like a PSU problem, do you have a spare one lieing around just in case the PSU is actually defective? If not, then it's most probably the motherboard.

Try disconnecting the USB pass through from the case to the mother board. It's possible your USB socket is shorting.

I've already tried this, if I'm understanding you correctly.

I unplugged the cable going from the front panel to the motherboard, with it plugged in, it won't even power on at all. I'll try and test it with another PSU.

I think i have one lying around somewhere, I'll give it a try, thanks.

Exact same problem with another PSU.

Edit: Pretty sure it's the motherboard, i tested the PSU in another PC and it works fine.

this is what it sounds like to me also, i'd disconnect everything from the MB and short the pins to see if it boots without the USB headers being connected

That's what i tried, took the motherboard out the case and just had the 2 main cables from the PSU plugged in, still the same problem.

Took the CMOS out for a few minutes, still the same. I can't see any light's on the motherboard, it just looks like it normally does when it boots up, i have a speaker connected but it doesn't stay on long enough for any beeps.

Strange, it appears to be working again, i added a stick of memory and it boots up, even with the memory removed it still boots now it just beeps to say that there' no memory.

I tried it with all my components installed and it works fine, i have no idea what was wrong because it still didn't work after removing the bad usb port and clearing the cmos.
