T-mobile G1 – The first of the Google Android Phones. A Review

went looking for a new phone tonight was going to be either iphone, blackbeerry storm or G1.

i had a play with all and the g1 was by far the best just a huge wow for me.

T mobile shop flext 30 800mins/text free WnW for 18 months and free phone bouns even the sales assistant was shocked when the till said free phone. he wasnt sure if it was a new deal starting tomorrow which had registered early as i took out the contract at 5:30pm, he even said he was going to get one himself for the same deal i got tonight.

which t-mobile store was this at? they might have a line around the block if you say where it is. :)

did you check if its the web'n'walk(1gb) or the web'n'walk plus(3gb)? also did he mention the 7 days network gurantee where you can cancle the contract if the reception in your area isn't very good(last month it said 14days but seems to have been cut to 7 now)? not sure if its only if you buy it online or instore as well, tho 1 of the girls behind the counter in my local store mentioned it when I asked a few weeks back.

I bet the guy that served you will get it for £20-£25/month due to staff discount.

I'm might be going into town tomorrow(well later today as its after midnight), will ask about this and might end up getting this over the touch hd(I'm looking at it on the o2 but mobiles.co.uk are messing about with the release date on it for the o2 contracts). I was in town last week and was told that its £70 for the phone on the £35/month.

sorry it was the exeter store and yes it was the 3gb (fair usage policy?) most friendly mobile phone store i have been in for a while.

oh and i previously / still have the nokia N95 8gb till i sell it...

Android Gets Flash

NEWS FLASH!!!

Big big big news for Android

iPhone and Android G1
Google has a new ally in its battle for smartphone dominance: Adobe.

The companies today revealed that that Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) has made its Flash technology compatible with the Android smartphone operating system developed by the Google-backed Open Handset Alliance. As a result, the enhancement may give devices like T-Mobile's G1 smartphone and other Android-based phones access to a key feature that's lacking from the industry's darling, the Apple iPhone.

Just to add to the G1 Android fun - It seems that the G1 hardware is capable of Multitouch!

Whenever the G1 vs iPhone debate gets underway, iPhone purists are quick to flag the G1’s lack of multi-touch input support. Turns out, it might just be able to handle it after all -on the hardware end, at least. Whilst tearing his G1’s workings apart line-by-line, a crafty coder going by RyeBrye came across an interesting artifact. It seems the driver for the Synaptics touchscreen has some code commented out; after recompiling the kernel with said code back in, he was able to track two finger presses at once.

So if the hardware supports it, why no multi-touch on the G1? Patents, presumably. While this in no way actually enables to you to do any kind of multi-touch funnin’ immediately (nothing made for the G1 is currently coded for use with multi-touch, afterall), it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Though we probably won’t see any official support for multi-touch on the G1 any time soon, someone with a bit of spare time to tinker will probably figure out a way to make use of it before too long.

Gets more confusing, rang T-Mobile this morning and said, "I would like to get an upgrade to the G1 as i know a friend who is on a similar tarrif to me and has got the free upgrade, and she said .. ummmm dont know how that happened because its £250 on an upgrade" and i was obviously like .. are you sure LOL as i have on a £27.50 a month tarrif. And she said there won't be any good upgrade offers until the end of January.

Very odd, one thing i hate about mobile phone companies, can never seem to get the same deal as other people.

Ah well - first thing I'd do is ask to talk to her manager and then if here is no joy there take it to retentions.

That price is ridiculous - you can buy them new on the Bay for £300

yeh, i guess im gonna wait a day or two while i line up some deals on other networks because i know sometimes you can threaten to leave to go to another operator and they dont care heh.

Yeah I don't entirely understand why they are a bit hot and cold with the retention. I suspect it often comes down to whether you catch someone on a bad day - hence my "can I talk to your manager" line. The managers will surely have some quotas to meet.

googling the google phone(how ironic? :) ) found this, ment to be an extended life battery(2200mAh, what's the original?).

didn't end up going to town on yesterday, will try and go today and see what I get told about the flext 30 deal.

Not entirely sure about the extra thickness thing - they supply you with a new backplate - it's hardly a svelte phone to start off with. The original is 1150mAh - sounds pretty good to me if it weren't for the added size.

can't sleep so surfing net on ipod touch, looking on the t-mobile website and have found that they've revised the price plans the g1 is available on. can now get it on combi 15 with web'n'walk plus(£20/month) with phone for £90, its free from £30/month now instead of £40/month(also available on the 12month plans) + comes with an additional 8gb card on top of the 2gb that already included in the box.

in light of all that I'm more tempted to get this over the touch hd and xperia x1 :)

The Shazam app is pretty cool too :)

Used to occassionally used this on my older phones, 50p a go but its free with android.

I can definitely recommend the G1, it's getting better with every day at the moment.

Damn, the new T-mobile deals are pretty tempting - £50 for the phone and £25 a month is pretty good! Tempted to cancel the Touch HD order if there are any more delays.

edit: It looks to me like the £25 a month deal doesn't have free internet?

If you click on the plan details bit it says "Internet on your phone £1 / day maximum" ...

EDIT: Actually if you go through the checkout, the £25 plan becomes £20, and they add webnwalk plus to it, meaning it still costs £25pcm. Not a bad deal.
