T-Mobile reducing data caps from 3GB per month to 500MB.

The fairest way would be to bring this in for all new users, and then force existing contract holders to change tariff at the end of the contract, whilst honouring the agreement until then.

Agreed.

To those upset by this, how much were you using? And what media were you watching?

I struggle to see how 3gb a month on 3G is even needed!

I'm upset by this, I don't really go anywhere near 3gb to be honest but I probably do go over the 500mb on occasion. I use iplayer and youtube sometimes, but not very often. Spotify would probably be the biggest data use app I have, having unlimited music in my pocket is amazing. Why should I have to worry about how much data I am using and not be able to watch that odd program on iplayer because I might not be able to listen to music for the rest of the month?

Without wanting to sound like a jedi, you need to be mindful of the future as well.

I didn't even have internet on my phone 20 months ago, so how much will I need over the next 20 months left on my contract? 500MB almost certainly won't be up to the task, but I was hoping 3GB would. I hit 400MB every month these days compared to 100-200MB 6 months ago so my usage is only going to increase.

Anyway, just got off the phone to T-Mobile and requested a manager callback (well, I asked to speak to one but nobody was available). The normal operator I spoke to go in a right little dizzy about it and put me on hold for 3 minutes in the middle, simply over the 30 days notice bit and whether I would then have 30 days from my notice date (which I haven't got yet) until my FUP changes. They don't have a clue.

Just had the exact same thing.

Im consistantly over 500Mb every month, last month which was a quiet month, only in work for 2.5 weeks of the month, I used 574Mb, my contract billing date is the 7th and I have used 141.7Mb in 3.5 days.

This is all from general use as my job requires mobile internet access.

It is the least restrictive 'restriction' so far, though. Would you prefer it was implemented as it was with Vodafone where you get 500mb tough, and if you browse a single website over, here is a bill?

They need protection from people like Russinating.

I think it's probably a better idea for long term sustainability if they introduce this and I think the way they've gone about it is nowhere near as bad as it could be.

However they quite clearly should be offering people the opportunity to leave without penalty as they are varying the terms of the contract.

It might be the least restrictive restriction so far but it's still a restriction which kind of defeats the point of having mobile internet (I can understand porn and torrents) on a smartphone when you have to use your wifi for anything more than a website.

I can live with the idea of 2-3GB a month but even that's annoying when it's advertised as 'unlimited' but 500megs in a time when people are increasingly updating facebook, twitter, use email, streaming audio etc on a larger scale is kind of going back the dark ages.
I had 500megs available to me around 10 year ago when I got a p900 and mobile internet was nothing more than text on a page yet in a time when most of our lives basically revolve around being internet connected we get the same.... Time for mobile telco's to realise what people need.

Now don't get me wrong I doubt I use that much myself but the fact is I would like to know I can use it if needed.

For me it might also be down to having been on first name terms with my isp and know the backend cost of data transfer and although I know the tech isn't totally the same they would likely use the same type of backhaul as our home isp.

Last time I checked this it cost the user 50p a gigabyte when you go over your limit so I'm sure they could offer at least 1GB without having an issue in terms of profit (this is the main reason really).

Another thing I've just thought of - does this new fup include android/windows phone updates etc?

I have just been on the phone to them and told him that 500meg of data is not what I signed up for and I am going to follow up with a complaint in writing.

The adviser said that I wouldnt be affected, however, i told him I had signed up for 1gig of data and now they were moving the goal posts 3 weeks into a contract.

I further explained to him, that how happy would he be as a adviser, if he bought a car to be told that it would do 50 mpg, only to be told later by the maker that he would have to let his tyres down to half of the tyres psi, but, still he will still be able to run the car.

Lets not let this one go guys. I signed up for 1gig so i should get 1 gig of data.

Ive not monitored my usage, but the ENTIRE reason i chose tmobile over o2 was due to the 3gb FUP, as I intended to and indeed do use spotify mobile a lot, and that will only increase in use not decrease!

If my maths are correct, if I use spotify (192kbps, therefore 1.4MB per minute) for more than 12 minutes (3 songs?) a day I'll go over the 500MB FUP. I use it for 90 minutes a day just on my commute!

LOL?

1.4 mb/min x 12 minutes = 16.8 mb.

I think you have a way to go yet.

Still not the point though. as I'm just coming out of contract I was looking at new deals and the T-mobile one was near the top of my list. Not anymore.

This is honestly Oranges doing through their part of the T Mobile merge. I actually thought that the merge was going to bring T Mobile like advantages to Orange, not turn T Mobile into the crap that Orange always have been.

Luckily for me, I'm not affected on my web'n'walk max plan, but I get a feeling T mob's next step is going to be trying to remove my 50% discoun. Should that happen I'll switch to 3's all you can eat sim only plan at £25. My current one is £28.75 a month with 900 mins or 1800 texts, plus 10 Gb data limit including tethering and Voip. I keep it purely for the data tariff, discount, and a nice upgrade every 18 months.

I'd lose the upgrades if I change to the 3 sim only tariff, but I have enough phones that work as modems for it not to be a problem.

I didn't know anything about this but will read over the thread...
Will T-Mobile have sent out messages to your phone if you are affected by this? I don't think I'm anywhere near the monthly limit but... If they are going to reduce it by that amount then I'd prefer to pay less for my contract. :|
It ends in February but that's not the point, I've quite liked their service and would like to stay with them (and have a reasonable data allowance).

Also not very happy about this.. I've been a T-Mobile customer for several years now, having started my third contract period in August, because of their good data policies (they were offering 1GB back when Orange were offering 30MB for a similar price). For my contract renewal, they gave me Flext 35 with inclusive web'n'walk Plus (providing the 3GB allowance for Android phones).

To be fair, right now I'm not going over the 500MB allowance, but as Russinating and hoppyintheuk point out, 3GB provides plenty for future usage, and it's what I agreed to in the contract terms - had they been offering me only 500MB then I would have considered other networks more than I did. Additionally, web'n'walk Plus allows tethering, so I'll be rather unhappy if they've deleted it off my account.

Three - The one plan now has All-you-can-eat data , This is also truly Unlimited data and you CAN Tether your phone. One plan starts from £25 per month, which isnt too bad considering you also get 5000 texts and 2000 anytime minutes to any network.

This will be my next tariff for sure if I am affected in anyway by shoddy orange's takeover of T Mobile. I've been with T Mobile for 5 years now purely for their best in the industry data plans.

See, if tmobile were offering 500mb per day FUP as per your calcs then i don't think there'd be this uproar ;)

if i can cancel my contract then ill be moving to that!

I just called 150 and was told not to worry and I'm not affected by this .... Thats a bummer, I wanted to change to that 3 sim only tariff lol.

Its just for their regular data plans, web n walk max at least is unaffected, but that normally costs £22.50 pm. I get it for £11.25 on top of oldskool flext 35 for £17.50, hence I've kept it for so long.

The only thing that will make me leave is if they cancel my lifelong 50% discount, I'm sure they'll eventually find a way lol.

But I'm paying £28.75 pm for 900 mins or 1800 texts and 10 Gb, the 3 tariff is 2000 mins, 5000 texts, and fully unlimited data for £25, too bad I'm tied to a contract and cant change right now. I still have like 14 or 15 months left :(

I have my X10 mini pro with easy tether fully enabled, works awesome but gets slowdown sometimes. I'm using my K850i atm though because easy tether cant connect to turbine's servers for DDO.
