I use CalMAN HTPC Pattern Generator 1.2, it's free, has numerous patterns for brightness, color, contrast, etc, to many opitions to list.
You can generate video test patterns from your PC, to assist in calibrating any display: home theater, HDTV, television, projector, LCD, or computer monitor.
Immediately thought "as opposed to one for a 42" or some other size?" lol
You probably don't want to read what I am about to write; especially if you're just looking for a quick fix. However, you should have a read through some of those links...especially the last one above. That one in particular gives very clear guidance on what is required to do a real calibration job...and it ain't just some free test patterns.
Without some hardware there's only so far you can go. But at least you can set the contrast, brightness and sharpness correctly. You will need a colour filter in order to set the colour control with any tri-colour pattern. Movies with the THX test patterns have a blue-only version that can be used without a filter. Thats about as far as you can go. But it will still be a big improvement over the out of box settings for most TVs.
i used one of the thx optimiser off one of my dvds and was pretty good. im really fussy and spent hours fiddling with settings and was never really happy but used the optimiser and was pretty happy with it.
