Looking for a tablet that I can give to my son to play with. Open to ideas as to branding etc. I dont want a tablet specifically for this age range as it will most likely get out grown. Have a budget of up to £100 and happy for it to be 2nd hand.

A two year old?!?

My son plays on mine occasionally but I find that he presses the home/recent apps button a lot exiting any app that is open.

Can you lock an app once open to stay open?

My sister gave my little 5 years old niece a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7 inch last xmas for £80, it have Kids Mode build in, she loved it and was very happy with it.

You will be surpised!

My son can turn the Kindle on, unlock the screen and choose the games he wants to play, my dad almost fell over when he watched him do it.

Yeah I was surprised at my little niece when she was 2 can turned on my sister work laptop, logged in Windows 7 to watched Doctor Who on BBC iplayer and played games too. Started primary school at 4.5 years old then when I read her first school report was amazed she had same reading level as 8 years olds so she will be 7 in 2 months time now have same reading level as 10 years old. :)

Get a Kindle Fire HD and a case, the "kiddie" tablets are utter garbage, slow, expensive, frustrating...

I bought my son a Kindle Fire HD when they had a deal on and I would have paid full price for it.

Get this case as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_991oJoFLw

I saw an advert for those and wondered how he might get on with it. How does your son get on with it?

:/ read him books, play with him and let him experience the world. 2 is far too young to be exposed to that sort of tech.

We do all of the above. Please don't think that this will be a replacement for interaction with my child or a replacement for going outside. This will be for that awkward time (hour or so in the evenings) when we can't take him outside and bed time. At present he gets frustrated and will not calm down despite our best efforts and many approaches. The only way we have found to calm him and give him something to focus on is Cbeebies apps on the Mrs iphone. This will have a strong focus on education and not just any old thing. Please don't judge based on assumptions.

We got our 5yr old a Samsung Galaxy Kids - essentially a Galaxy Tab 3 with a rather kid-friendly case with handle, and a chunky stylus, as well as a really decent kids setup.
It runs whatever we throw at it, and when little one gets a little older we can simply take it out of the case thing and disable kids mode etc.
Our soon-to-be 8yr old, however, has stipulated an iPad

The case is great, little handle that serves to stand it up as well.

The kindle itself is pretty sturdy and paired with the case it's totally fine.

I really agree with this... at 2 years old no way would I be exposing him to that tech yet. I'd like my kids to have a bit of a normal childhood before they get exposed to tech, rather than them being hooked and conditioned to it from the moment they can form conscious thoughts. I know form seeing my cousins that even when they get to 5 and 7, they start pining for it and it's really unnerving somehow. I'd rather they pine for normal toys and then get the tech at a reasonable age where they can fully appreciate it, as lets face it, it's not going to impact their IT skills if they learn it a little later in life.

2 years old... ack.

Everything in moderation.

Our daughter has just turned 4 and has had access to a tablet since she was 2.

We still do all the traditional stuff with her but if you restrict the access to educational games there's little downside.

Her maths skills have come on leaps and bounds using a simple maths based game app.

In terms of which one, I'd just go the cheapest you can find. Most stuff they'll be doing isn't exactly Far Cry 4, so you don't need cutting edge technology. Get a case for the inevitable occasional bump and you'll be good to go.
