Thailand Query

Myself and a few other folk were planning a trip to Thailand in the next two months or so and we had been looking forward to it. We were sorting out tickets a few weeks ago and one of the guys that was going had got talking to some folk who I think just got back from Thailand.

Anyhow, its seems to be, we have been advised from these people that we should stay well clear with some references to do with it becoming dangerous especially for westerners etc and also to do with the fact that when you get in, its difficult to get back out of. My friends have decided not to go and I personally don't know what to think of the problems in Thailand.

Has anyone any knowledge of the situation in Thailand and is it a place to stay well away from at this minute? If so, could any of you folk recommend an alternative destination as we could all do with a break soon.

Cheers for any input.

Thailand is a wonderful place but there is an unstable political situation in the capital. Outside of there, tourists are welcomed as always. The main airports were blockaded last month but that is unlikely to happen again.

If you want a similar experience, you could try Cambodia or Vietnam but they're less developed so the tourist experience is a little raw. More for the experienced Asian traveller than a first-timer.

Thailand is still perfectly safe to visit and the travel problems unlikely to re-occur.

The best place to check is the foreign office travel advice for Thailand.

Just google foreign office travel advice its very up to date. It's fine though, I go all the time.

It's not dangerous for westerners and the difficulty in getting back out may be a reference to the issue they had with protestors at the airport a few months back, it caused some distruption. Note that it was a sit down protest.

went last jan 2008 for 2.5 weeks including Bangkok, Chiang mai and Krabi, ive got fond memories of it all esp Bangkok
the airport is superb, yes its unstable politically, but it has been for decades
id go back tomorrow

ditto, went last February for a month, i thought Bangkok was safer than any UK city, even roaming the streets at 4am

This airport lark was unfortunate, but it's still safe, go and have the time of your life.
As the man said - i'd go tomorrow if i could

Go to Thailand, you will love the place.

I have just come back which was my sixth holiday there.

Already got my April trip booked..

Many thanks for the replies people. Much appreciated.

I'll go now and show the guys your posts and let them decide. I want to go anyhow.

Cheers.

A friend of mine has just left to go to Vietnam & Cambodia but will be returning to Thailand for a few more weeks.

Hes had no problems there at all.

During the 2006 coup I was in Bangkok and apart from and increased military presence and extra security there was no problems at all.

Get yourself there, I'm hoping to go end of Feb/March
