Tailored suits

All my suits are from Paul Smith some are off the peg and a couple custom made.

I would recommend you go into one of their stores and spend time trying on the various fits and styles, I think some would fit your budget. They will advise on whether the suit will maintain the look if they take the seat in and / or take up the legs.

I've used Dress 2 Kill several times with good results. Their bespoke suits are well within your price range and they're forever advertising special deals in the London papers.

The only big downside is that there's a reason why they can offer bespoke suits at such cheap prices - they're made abroad. This means that they can take 6-8 weeks to be made and shipped to the UK. Alterations are done in the UK though, if I recall correctly.

Well I happen to have a suit from "a suit that fits" and I was impressed with the tailoring - it was made to measure which was great, and able to completely customise it to suit my style/needs with lovely materials.

I'm sure there are many better suit makers out there, but for a good made to measure suit I'm more than happy with it. I have anther few bespoke suits that aren't as good, and one other which is on par/better.

Sure you can go full snob-mode and go made and get a really expensive bespoke suit, but as much as I'd love that I just cannot justify the expense / afford it.

For day-to-day suits, I just buy off the peg and get it tweaked to fit.

Thats probably because hes gone though the process of a bespoke suit fitting (skeleton baste etc) only for you who hasn't gone though the process at that tailor to cast doubt on whether he knows the difference. Its hardly surprising he thought you patronising.

If you believe that those sort of companies proved a 'bespoke' suit then that is up to you. I'm just questioning it because the OP and/or others are going to spend a lot of money on this.

I really don't see the point of going through some play acting - having a salesman, not a tailor, take some measurements to then be sent off to somewhere in Asia.... just so you can say you've got a 'bespoke' suit. For the same price you could get a made to measure suit from a real tailor.

Same issue with the Hong Kong tailors who do tours over here - set themselves up in a hotel room, function room etc.. and a bunch of city wideboys go and get their 'bespoke' suits which inevitably turn out to be a bit naff. Frankly most of them would get better results from even just buying a T M Lewin suit and getting it adjusted.

Getting a reasonable off the rack suit adjusted at a good tailor will make you look better than 90% of other people wearing suits as most people don't bother with adjustments.

MTM should give very good results too.

You sound very angry about how other people might buy suits and seem to enjoy casting that "well, as long as you're happy ..." fish hook at the same time.

What exactly is your experience in either tailoring or buying tailored clothing? I know it was asked before but I don't recall your answer.

No anger here - seems to be more anger from the people getting bent out of shape by my skepticism.

No experience in tailoring, I own a couple of MTM suits one of which was perhaps a silly purchase as I could have got a bespoke one elsewhere for the same price - no actual bespoke ones yet, I also know/worked with some people who have bespoke and some people who claim to having either been measured by some Chinese bloke who's flown over or having visited one of the various companies claiming to do 'bespoke' suits on the cheap... it is a false economy, I've seen the results of Hong Kong tailors etc.. Like I said before, for most people, you'd do better even getting an RTW suit and having it adjusted.

Going with one of these companies and it really is going to be a case of the emperor has no clothes...

I haven't made any qualification of what I do or don't believe with respect to "those sort of companies." Skidder has stated he has gone through the process of a skeleton basted fitting and subsequent fittings and that wouldn't have been done if you bought a MTM suit.

It would have been a rather elaborate charade to get the material Skidder had chosen, note down style and features he wanted and create a skeleton baste. Then make all the alterations to make it fit, bin it and then get a pre-made garment in the same material in the same style and with the same features that Skidder wanted, and make the alterations to the pre-made garment, send it back for a second fitting making the MTM suit look incomplete on purpose then make any desired alterations and complete the suit again.

Where's the anger? I said you were being patronising, which you were, whilst continuing to ignore the salient point.

edit: as above, how funny

Anyway I'm off to the mobile phone section to **** off Chinese mobile phones I've never seen or tried and to chuck around a few quotation marks to make me look like an all round good egg.
