Doesn't surprise me. I think most seen the writing on the wall regarding the AAA market. Very sad to see one part of the gaming industry go down this route. Mobile games, as well as consumers have played their part which lead to this type business model.

Personally, i mostly play Indie, mid-tier games now and rarely buy AAA games. And if i do it's because i've picked them up for under a tenner with all the DLC intact. Even looking at my Steam wish list, i've got 72 games on there and not one AAA title is on it. It's a sign of the times.

Good news is that i won't be upgrading my GPU very often.

Micro transactions don't really bother me as I don't even look at the store. BF4 had the early unlock thing but surely part of the fun is unlocking new guns/attachments etc. If they start making micro transactions in single player games that otherwise can't be unlocked then that's when I'll start moaning. The worst culprit for me is FIFA ultimate team. It's pretty much gambling and preys a lot on kids imo.

I really don't like micro-transactions. DLC I will buy if the game is good enough to me but loot boxes etc are not my thing.

DLC I dont mind so much, some games do take the **** a bit with DLC but some games have had some very good DLC (Bioshock, Dishonoured and Borderlands are some which I've really enjoyed the DLC for). I dont mind cosmetic stuff too much either. Game affecting stuff is a bit of a different ballgame though.

But again, it comes back to that old thing of supply and demand, if there was no profit in microtransactions/loot crates then no game company would do them. The fact that they are (and increasingly so) means that there is obviously quite a fair number of gamers spending money on them and buying the stuff. For me, I dont place the blame so much at the companies who are really just maximising their profits, I place the blame at the gamers who buy the stuff and make the concept profitable, just as I dont blame the Gold sellers in MMOs I blame the people buying the gold.

Never understood the fuss about them, don't want them then don't buy them.

Can't say I've ever noticed myself getting spanked in any online game because of micro transactions.

As long as we get what we pay for and micro transactions are just optional content it doesn't bother me.

But if they make it so you have to buy the additional content just to get what you paid for in the first place than I will be .

Thing is though, thats kind of where the problem is at the minute. A lot of people are OK with them for the time being saying they wont be if they get any worse but if we are OK with them now...they probably will.

Not having a go at what you said just using it as an example is all. :)

Cosmetic items...fine. Pay to win, not cool.

That said, like the OP, can't remember the last AAA game I bought.

RIP Borderlands 3 then.

Not necessarily, if its a good game it wouldnt stop me buying it. For instance, Assassins Creed Origins has microtransactions in it but its such a good game that its now one of the leading contenders for my game of the year and it having microtransactions hasnt impacted on my enjoyment of the game in the slightest.

I loved Borderlands 2 and got the expansion pass to get all of the DLC expansions... There were amazing and done correctly and well worth the money.

I doubt I'll have the same experience with BL3, will have to see what reviewers think of it before I jump in.

It depends how it's done. BL2 was grindy enough as it is, but struck a decent balance between grind and fun. If they were to reduce drop rates further so they can shove in their brand new legendary golden chest that can only be opened with their all new currency that can only be bought with real money then I'm out.
