I've got myself a takeaway delivery job with a local Chinese doing 3 nights a week for extra spending notes. Going on a trial tonight but taking a mate along who used to work in a pizza shop to help me so hopefully won't be too stressful.

Anyone here done takeaway deliveries before? How did you find doing it and would you do it again?

Of course if I don't like it or the money is no good then I will just drop it. I do have a day time job.

Did this for 5 years while I was at sixth form/Uni, I worked for a large Pizza chain.

Easiest job I've ever had, you will quickly learn the area, and who tips the most ;).

I got paid an hourly wage + £1 per delivery + tips. I don't think it works the same in the Chinese/Indian/Small Pizza/Kebab places. They tend to pay pittance and hope you rely on tips. I was a bit of a hot head young driver back then, and did a lot of deliveries because I was erm... Very fast! The more deliveries you do the more money you make, Fridays and Saturdays are the best nights to work, I'd usually average about £10-20 in tips for a 5 hour shift + minimum salary and the fact getting £1 a delivery back then covered my petrol and it also covered my personal use as well! I hardly ever had to put in my own money for petrol! I was averaging about £6.50 per hour and having my petrol paid for, which isn't bad considering minimum wage back then was £4.20!

I suppose it's fine if you know your way around etc. My biggest problem would be getting lost. And then wanting to eat the food. It'll either make you eat more or it'll put you off for life.

Been told it is £35 a night plus delivery charges. Something like that. Shop was noisy when the guy was telling me.

Done delivery work for a local pizza place and also Dominoes, many years ago.

It was a laugh with the other drivers, but was a pita... mainly due to pay and delivery costs/fuel and wear on your motor. That and your car stinking of pizza/chips/curry or whatever you're delivering.

Re. pay, maybe it's better now, but it wasn't much when I did it 4/5 nights a week from 5:30pm - 01:00am

You meet some right wierdos when making your delivery though. But on the upside I met some cute women - repeat deliveries etc always nice to get a smile and a laugh and a tip too hehe.

Then there's the house of drunks back from a friday night at the pub... you walk up to the door and ring the bell and you hear cheering and shouts of "PIZZZZZZAAAAAAA!" loud enough to put world cup celebrations to shame... usually get tips from these types of delivery too :p

I was even propositioned once by two women at the address next door to the one I was delivering to...
"is that pizza for us?"
"er.. no, it's for no.20"
"Oh, go on, we'll make it worth your while...."
"......"

:o

Someone I work with knows someone who also delivers for the same place (thats how I got the job) says they've had a last delivery come in at 10.25pm 5 miles away. Which can be a bit of a downer when you were just about to knock off.

We used to do it on our way home. Then give the money on the next shift, or use your tips and petrol money to cover it. And you take home whatever they give you at the door!
