For some reason within the past few days whenever i go to 'My Computer' it takes about 8 seconds for anything to appear with the timing thing on the cursor coming up :S

On vista ultimate 32 bit
q6600
2gb corsair xms6400c4
asus p5k
80gb primary
120gb secondary
x1600xt

I did read online somewhere who was having same problem and that it was due to hp photosmart drivers which I also have installed on my PC.

Just wanted some opinions b4 i did anything.

Thanks

UPDATE; Seems to be doing it on other things like when I click 'Network'. Also when "My Computer" finally loads when i browse through the actual files on the hard drive they open quickly and instantly, just loading "my computer" takes ages, v weird :S

Unplugged my printer from usb, restarted windows, then clicked on "my computer" - still took ages, then plugged printer back in and turned it on and it fixed the long waiting time :S beats me

It can be anything, but is usually because it is taking time to look at / connect to the other drive.

Have you got any mapped network drives?

What exactly is a mapped network drive.

Could it be something to do with my HP drivers?

When i did restart then plug it back in "my computer" loaded up instantly like it used to. Now ive uninstalled the drivers completly but still having the same problem again

Erm... can't remember off hand to be honest, I'm sure google will turn up something though. the machine I had was doing the same as yours, also when you right clicked on something it was doing it, turned out to be the print to web or upload to web option that the HP software had installed, there was either a setting to disable it or maybe a quick edit of the hosts file. It was some time ago :(

has your HP printer got a memory card reader in ?

sounds like its having problems reading it so could be HP driver related.

I think there's a quick edit you can do to stop "looking" at all the drives when you open up My Computer, I'll have a look and see if I can find it again.

UPDATE: Uninstalled all hp drivers and plugged printer back in and turned it on. Vista started to install some stuff for it but needed me to insert a cd (I can get these drivers later).

Anyway i just let vista do its thing and now when i go to "My Computer" it loads instantly. Dunno what will happen if i reinstall drivers :S

it will be to do with the HP drivers for the memory card probably

even if thers nothing in it, my computer checks it when it loads up

it gets no response so hangs while it waits.

Have installed another version of drivers, and everything going ok atm. Dont think I got the correct version of drivers for my printer when i originally installed them.

Well you have it fixed now so I don't know if this is of any use to you but I thought I'd post it anyways:

Open My Computer
Click on Tools menu
Click on Folder Options
Click on the View tab.
Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
Click Apply
Click Ok
Reboot your computer

Also, this is for XP but I'd imagine that something similar would work for Vista.

Cant find this at all in vista. It seems to be getting worse and worse and taking longer to load up 'My Computer'. Has anyone else got any ideas about this issue?
