someone tried to convince me that you can take the motor / heads from one hard drive and put them into another (of the same make / model)

so if the motor had failed you could swap it from a working unit..

but it was my understanding that (other than the PCB) any fault in the drive required specilist equipment to have any chance of recovering anything...

The person seems adimant that it was possibly (and it was something he did) it set me to wondering.

I would assume you need a clean room and a bit more than a screw driver..
