I am considering getting a 48" Samsung JU6400 for £650. This seems like a very good price for this model.

I currently have an 8 year old 32" Hanspree. I've measured, and 48/50 would fit perfectly in the TV nook.

I mainly use it for Xbox One, Plex and Amazon Prime.

4k seems a bit overkill this year, but if I can get this tv to last as long as the last one (which still works fine), then it doesn't seem so bad.

What are your thoughts, am I just wanting this for the sake of wanting it, would I be better off saving a couple hundred quid and getting the 1080p equivalent?

2 options I would go for:

Save the cash and go 1080p
Buy a better quality 1080p TV

Even if you keep this for 5 years, it would be a good stop gap to seeing where the technology and broadcasting is going.

I don't know if it has upscaling but if it does then I'd go for it. I've seen upscaling on some of the 55"+ models and it looks pretty great.

The only negative I would say is that it's a tad small for 4k. My personal opinion is that 4k needs 55" or bigger, but then of course it depends how far away you sit, etc, etc.

To notice any benefit above 1080p on a 55" screen you need to be less than 7.5 feet or 2.3m from it. The eye cannot resolve any greater than 1080p at 7.5 feet or more.

I checked the distance. My living room is quite narrow, so it's only about 6.5 to the screen from the couch. The TV unit will take up to a 50" TV at most.

Sticking with that Samsung, the 1080p version (H6400) seems to only be £120 cheaper, or £100 if I went for the 50" model.

Hmm.

There's no real point paying the extra £120 if you're not going to fully benefit from it.

But I wants it! Wah!

Actually, more serious question, what of this Tizen OS that's on their 2015 tvs? Seems like it could be better supported going forward that the 2014 models, or they could hack it for a year or two and give up. If I'm using an Xbox one though, are those concerns mute?

I'd be more inclined to go Sony now they have Android on some of their models, it looks like it could actually be quite useful.

Just buy it. Don't compromise on features beforehand because it may bug you later on. Vice versa is less annoying e.g. I got one with 3D knowing it was a gimmick but thought what they hey, I'll watch at least a couple of films. I watched 5 mins of one and never watched again its that poo. But then that's mainly because of Samsungs bloody active glasses.

I know myself that when I buy something cheaper because it's right, it gets on my **** that I maybe should've splashed out a little more.

If this TV is going to last you as long as the last then it's a sound investment.
