Talk me out of being an idiot...

The weekend car is going to be something along the lines of a Fiesta judging by what the others in the team have had as their first cars. Not going to be enough room for the kids.

Using the same logic, a Focus ST and mk1 Leon isn't going to fit three kid seats in the back either though. The modern fiesta is almost as big inside as the older Focus and Leon

Can you not just ask for a monthly car allowance instead?

I'm not sure how that works. Just asked my manager and he said he would have to speak to the director.

I'm assuming that if the company would still be paying the fuel then I wouldn't be able to get anything considered 'fun' anyway?

The S-Max would be used on weekends with the kids.

If anyone can recommend something reasonably fun and practical that would be an option.

I don't know if any cars could fit a child seat each side of a booster seat but I imagine it would be a struggle?

This is all sorts of wrong.

I think you need to put a weekend car on hold until your budget allows one without having to shoehorn it in and compromise everything else. Have you taken tax/insurance/running costs into consideration?

Why not sell the Clio, use that to pay off credit card debt then your Mrs use the S max and you the company car?.

A weekend car is a luxury afforded to those without children or enough disposable income. It doesn't sound like your current situation allows it right now. I have a mate with 3 kids and the costs are eye watering so can definitely understand the struggles.

There's plenty of room for 2 kids in the back, although prams and such would be a struggle (as it would in your proposed Leon, or whatever).

Since the third is not yet actually on the way, and you're already juggling finances and pushing your wife and kids into an older potential money-pit just to afford a basic hatchback, perhaps having another isn't the brightest idea at this time? A wise older man (with a very nice garage including Astons, McLarens and such) once told me that 'Children will bring you the greatest of unimaginable joys, and fulfil you in ways you didn't even imagine... But never have more than fits in the back of a sports car.'

He was right, but I didn't listen! So now I do much the same as you, with a 2018 S-Max for the wife and kid duties and a BMW toy for myself.

Why not just keep the current S-Max, sell the Clio and have your wife drive the S-Max full time? You can use the cash from the Clio to start a fund towards something for you to mess around with.

Car allowance is paid to you and you then use the money to purchase or PCH/PCP a vehicle that is suitable for you. Different companies will have different policies on what they see as 'suitable' and some will not stipulate any restrictions. There is no reason to think why they would stop you getting a Fiesta ST if they were going to give you a Fiesta in the first place. As for the fuel being paid for by the company I don't see that as an option really, they will probably give you a standard mileage allowance however, so if you have a lead foot then you are paying for that.

Looks like I've been talked out of being an idiot :D

Been speaking to my manager today. He's going to push the director to allow me to have a van, which would be £70p/m charge. Failing that, they will discuss something large enough to allow for the children.

So now the S-Max is going to go and I'm going to grab something large enough for us and two kids. Octavia VRS comes to mind? Plus that would allow me to do some modding to keep me occupied.

Plus the Clio is going as it is too small to be practical anyway. Any suggestions for something that is decent on fuel but nor stupidly large. Probably around 3.5-4k budget?
