talk talk wireless to laptop problem

I'm round the inlaws today and they just changed from sky to talk talk.
They use a desktop and laptop wirelessly the desktop has conected fine, the laptop won't, well to local only.
Both are using vista, and have tried the dongle from the desktop on the laptop and no joy.
He's rang tech help and run through some stuff with nothing, then was put on to the next level of tech help where he was told there is a problem conecting laptops, with no fix??

Can you guys come up with some help / checks to hopefuly get the laptop conected.

Networks aren't my thing so type like your talking to a 5 year old

we've run ipconfig and they are different.
for whatever reason on set up. it doesn't go to the window were you put in your wireless password.
in the network center window it maps to an 'unidentified network'
when starting a new network it does see the talktalk router.

Any ideas ?, I can't believe a company as big as talk talk have a problem with laptops wirelessly that can't be fixed??
plus I can't see why there would be a difference over a desktop wirelessly
