Talk to me about EV chargers

I'm quite happy with my Zappi, integrates fine with my existing solar, batteries and eddi.

I got Octopus to install mine and they used a cable that had the wiring for the CT clamp built in (ultra ev I think I was called) so no need for a separate run of ethernet for example for CT Clamp purposes. Took quite a while for a fairly standard install and was a good few hundred cheaper than the local companies I tried. Very decent install job.

Yep, looks like I'm going Zappi. My (excellent) electrician guy fits them, so all is well. He traced the 30m cabling route and said there's a few corners and obstacles but it really wasn't a problem to do. Waiting on quote.

just make sure he wires in the CT clamp..... using the HARVI to do it wirelessly should work, tho mine gave me issues until i had it wired in properly (which means i have 2 cables where as could have been 1 if done from the get go). having the CT clamp wired solved all the issues i was getting inititally. Its just 1 less thing to worry about if ever you have issues and need to problem solve.

Yeah he's be using the EV power cables, so CT clamp wires are integrated.

Installed. Started at 08:00, finished at 18:00

10 hours?
I thought mine took a long time at 4 hours.

I had a bloke on Facebook telling me he had his mate come round and fitted him a 32A plug and put an EV cable on the end of it all for £100 and any Electrician can do that :)
I asked for his details because I was in the market but obviously the guy did everything to put me off.
In the end another guy posted "So it didn't happen" :)

The materials alone to fit a 32A commando socket are not far off £100, there is no way you’d get an electrician out of bed for under £300, even if it only took an hour.

Do you mind sharing how much it was? I think i'd need about a 30m run to get it anywhere useful when i need one

The install alone was £950 Inc VAT.

  • Supply and installation of 1 x Surge protection device main switch.
  • Supply and installation of 1 x External consumer unit.
  • Supply and installation of up to 35m x 10mm2 SWA clipped to external surfaces.
  • Supply and installation of up to 35m x External rated Cat5 clipped to external surfaces to enable connection of current clamp.
  • Installation of 1 x Client supplied EV charger with built in PEN loss protection.
  • Carry out necessary inspections, tests and certification as required.

If you want SWA + Cat5/CT combo it will be more expensive. The run was a bit over 30m in the end.

sometimes I think I went into the wrong business tbh. The annoying thing is as well my dad was a self employed builder with contacts in all the related trades.
instead I listened to my teachers!

Mounted on the inside of the car port on the front of our detached barn/garage. 30m run around the house with obstacles and surge isolator install.

I wish I had mine somewhere else which might have took 30 metres of cable but that wouldn't have taken 30 minutes at my house to install.
Obviously the surge protector (the black box) was the big job and he had to move stuff round in our cabinet.

I listened to might teachers as well but then every trades person I’ve interacted with have had a broken body by the time they are 50 so it’s swings and roundabouts. Most of them had a very limited pension also so they definitely had another 18 years to go.

I’ve also seen them do stuff that I’m simply not willing to do. For example, a young lad was sent up a ladder to fix the bird protector on my solar panels. It involved shimmying up a 30cm gap between where my solar panel end and a drop to certain death off the gable end of my house with zero safety equipment. No thanks.

lol sounds like my dad . he never worked with anyone other than his mates who were as mental as he is . some of his "scaffolding" was right out of the introduction to an episode of casualty.

So it was more like £1500 all in? jeez... looks like if i get an EV i'll just have to make do with the granny charger then :( I couldn't justify 15-20% o the purchase price of a car on something like that :(

I'm missing something here what Yaayuh had, obviously Cat5 added.

Mine cost £999 for 10 metres and it wasn't much more for 30 metres.
It won't let me do the calculation.
